Hi Guys, here are previews of a new Greek collection of soldiers .
for today the Spartans ..I am going to submit it in a day or 2 as I was delayed with my PC issues and lost the other sets previews ..so have to re-render it again
I hope you like
the new sets different way of texturing as usual as all materials information is stored into the actual maps
and each map is 4096x4096 pixel, including, Diffuse, Specular, Glossy , Normal, Displacement ( of choice ) and should works in any other application and not just DS or Poser , the maps are made with the (universal language ) if you know what I mean ..
also the set include 2 different kind of cap, one for animation and one for posing manually , what allow you to pose the cloth in any way possible even with the mouse without touching the parameters , folding it down or move in any direction independent from the main figure from the pelvis down just like with handles but better
also the sword holder have own bones so you can pose it the way you like going with the gravity
I hope you like
Cath

WOW - that is Amazing!!!!! :O
...now all I need to do is come up with a reason to render some Spartans! :P
I thought those renders were actually from the 300 film!!!
Thanks Craggles :) more great stuff on the way
Be still my quivering wallet! :)
Here is the The high detailed inspired by Greek Hoplite armed Soldier .. I added the forearms Armour , actually they used armor on chest arms and legs only but looking cool
just simple quick previews
FANTASTICAL work hon!
and more previews of the set
Thanks Richard and Simon , over 300 but hours of work LOL
Whoa - that is also AMAZING!!!! This is more like something I could use (no offence to topless guys (with incredible abs) but I have the same issue with females when they wear tiny unpractical armour). :)
...Is that a second set or is it included in the first set? :D
These aren't in the store yet are they? If they are, I must be going blind. :$
Could probably get a good phalangite and argyraspid out of this set :)
No that is separate set for the theme as it would be to big , also Hercules is coming to match them so to much stuff to put into one package and everyone will get what they looking for
They are not in the store yet but will be soon available
I based the second set on some original documentation and adjusted to my taste
well the ancient Greeks soldier did not even wear underwear when you look on the old paintings and they avoid anything that will go in the way but in the late era they moved into more practical way of protecting them self in the battle
armored women are fantasy , beside Athena that was armored to gain more respect from the male community
I will let you know when it get released..
Actually if you do research you will see that the armor back in the day was sort of skimpy. It's nothing like the full body English armor. Just protected the really important stuff like family jewels, head, shoulders, sometimes knees... forearms. I think the more money you had back then the more armor coverage you had....
they did not wear armor , different helmet , you can get the The Greek Phalanx soldier if you skip the arms braces and left just the chest plate and hide the face plate on the helmet it will be very closer then to the Phalanx , I may doing the other as well as it request another torso cloth and helmet
The shield would be a lot smaller for the phalangite and the armour would be bronze (after Alexander had sent back to Macedon for metal upgrades to the mainly leather armour used at first). The sarissa was also a 'touch bigger' than the spear carried by the hoplites.
in the first Greek era they wearing just helmets spear and shield without clothing or sandals completely naked , armors and tunics was later in the last era
the Rich generals has amazing detailed armors and helmets with serpents or other mystical creatures , the regular soldiers not , how closer it was to the Roman era how more detailed the armors was .. and trust me I always do research before I do anything , there are many different types of soldiers with different kind of outfits ..depends of the era
in the last era they used mostly bronze for armors before that painted leather for the torso and legs and just the helmet was bronze
I want to make one more with the painted leather as it looks so cool .

I am mostly a fan of the Alexandrian period (though woefully most knowledge has evaporated over the years of non-use ..!). I recall there being an armour/troop type that used contoured armour to resemble a 'six-pack': thorakatoi?
Me too.. Thorakitai was heavy armored, the type of the soldiers , they also used the Celtic shirt ( tunic ) Alexandrian period was the biggest and most influential in ancient world , the golden age
here some preview of the second set, rendered with just DS preview scene .. no special set or light ..render in seconds
Ahh, the 4th Century BC - I remember it well ... ;) Considering the brevity of his life the impact he (and also his father) had on both the general Hellenic area and wider middle East was quiet staggering. A lot of the words and phrases I want to use for the troops come from Wargames Research Group rules and lists of armies for tabletop war-gaming - but I suspect a lot of people would not have a clue if I started wittering about MI, HI and LMI as well as LTS, J and Sh ... ;) (Medium Infantry, Heavy Infantry - both close formation troop types, Light Medium Infantry - loose formation troops), Long Thrusting Spear, Javelin and Shield). In WRG terms there are/were various Alexandrian armies, from early to Selecuid and Ptolemaic. Depending on the time period chosen and/or use of certain troop types you would be able to 'buy' different troops/options - when playing a game you decided upon how many points each army could be made up from. Each figure (representing 20 people) cost points, based on armour and weapons, etc. and each formation cost a certain amount, and so on. Been a long, long while since I played, let alone watched and Ancients wargame ;)
Wow that many? Guess that means I should not expect great works in one night and look like that.
Love it! I love historical clothing for my figures!
That attention to detail on the metal really is impressive...
For 2 sets yes , the modeling I can do in 2 days but then texturing take longer 83 textures for the Second soldier and 57 for the Spartan
after the base modeling and rigging ( not automatic ) I had to sculpt each figure as all textures you see are from the 3D sculpting , and painted no photos so it take a little longer time to finish , plus new material setting take me long time as the materials are reflection based
I tried something different this time for Daz Studio the way I do for my contractor
they render very fast and no special light setup is needed , beside at last 1 light with specular , the clothing don't need AO so it speed up the rendering time , also hand painted custom weight maps , next time It will take me minder time as I developed new workflow
also you can render huge renders without losing the details as all textures are 4096x4096 with standard values and colors used in most programs .. I could do it the regular ways and save time but I got bored with my last workflow and was looking for some challenge to learn new stuff
1. Modeling the clean base models for rigging in DS one set 20 hours in Zbrush
2. After rigging , exporting back to Zbrush, convert to 5-6 million poly each figure and sculpt all the details
3. Poly Painting the models and extracting all the Maps, Diffuse, Normal, Displacement, Object Space Normal , AO, Cavity
4. Finishing painting in Photoshop
5. Setups all materials ( and I changed it like until yesterday ) until I am happy that it works in all light conditions like Standard, Uber, AoA
6. Packing it today
I made totally 25 figures for 2 sets and 140 textures and spend 250 hours for modeling and texturing and 50 hours for rigging adjustment and materials , and I work around 10 hours a day
It was cool challenge I learned a lot of new techniques so next time it will be much faster already

here is one of the preview shot of the maps in 100% 4096x4096 scale for the leather pants ..as you see just fragment
so huge renders can be made using this set without losing any details , how lower your shading rate setup in DS how more details you will get , when I render in distance, I use 0.010 for the shading rate, and when very closer up I use 0.10 DS tend to change the maps resolution when rendering from distance so details are loosed , Normal maps are the most important here as they give the details of the model surface so very much depend of the shading rate in the rendering setting , and since all the textures and cloth textures are 3D maps they compliment each other, with this I mean they correspond with the model as closer as you can get regarding the object and space compared to real 3D scan , if you scan pants with textures using 3D scanner it would be the closed to this set .. that was my challenge to reproduce the maps this way to match the industry standards in DS , now if you use the maps in other professional programs you should get accurate results for the physically based rendering (PBR) like Octane or Reality without to worry about the values , just pluging the maps in the right channels set them on 100% and ready
I will include Read me how to use them in other programs and explain what maps do what exactly
I like shaders and other material effect but they are set to work just with one set of light and will never works the same with other light set ever , if the set don;t include the light set you will in most case never get the same result you pay for , with physical maps the shader values are stored inside the maps so can be used in any programs independent of the light condition as the light do not affect the shader anymore , it is interesting .. sorry for the little novel , I am in process of reincarnation into the next level lol sucking like a sponge artificial intelligence and knowledge
It don't mean that the last 2 sets are God know what.. it is just new way of doing things as we progress to improve myself and provide you will simple yet cooler way of working with my products ..
Awesome! I'll buy this set when it is available. Best Spartan set I have ever seen :)
WOW this looks so very good.
Spartan does seem to be the wrong word to use for this set ... :)
As a matter of fact I agree. It is just that the first pics Cath showed us in this thread strongly remind the '300' film :)
Why ? it is Spartan soldier lol or I should remove his sandals and pants and let him run naked for the accuracy hahaha
The second set can be also Spartan King Leonidas I
it is not exactly historical reconstruction in 100% so everything is allowed
Maybe Spartan is a play on words; I'm thinking they're saying there a lot of items in this set.
Yeah that is true .. it is influenced by the movie so it reminds you correctly
Spartan is the name of the society and there they have different kind of soldiers in the different eras.. from nothing to heavy armored
