michael 8.1 gross detail [solved]

Hi, I've just about given up with trial and error, I feel I've tried everything. It's not just M8.1 I had this problem before but, it's with M8.1 today that I can't resolve it. The details on the skin are way, way too strong. I can get rid of them in the viewport but when it comes to a render they're back. I started off with the micro detail normals, details on/off, regular normals, but nothing gets rid of the lunar landscape. See attached. What can I do?
Thanks

Sounds like displacement to me. Turn down the displacement strength, test render, and adjust as necessary.
yeah, that was the first thing I looked at, there is no displacement. I have litterally just found out what's going on though. After deleting every map it was still there so I went to Parameters. It was HD details dialled in with subd.
