Renderer Question: Will I be able to achieve the look I want with 3Delight?

Looking around various gallery sites like dA, there's a lot of 3D art that has a certain...feel..look to it.
This crisp, clean, ultra-real, unreal look.
That's the look I want to achieve as I progress in learning this program.

I tried to find some promo images from the store that show the feel I want.

From some of the pictures that I've found that give such info, I see Octane being mentioned a lot.
I'm not looking to invest that much in this hobby, at least not now, and not for the foreseeable future.

Is the look I want something that will be achievable using the build in renderer?

Yes. This is mainly a Lights question.

Check this video, it is using lights available with Daz.

    And it's probably good enough!

Also, Octane uses a method of rendering that is replicating "real" light propagation.

There are several other options to do that within Daz with a plugin that will cost you a tiny fraction of the Octane price.

Here is an example from Elianeck.

There's plenty to do before having to invest too much!

I simply recommend sticking to tutorials for a while and not being content with reproducing the same quality. Within 1 month of watching a video here, creating a test there, reading about specularity or lights, learning the interface, you should be able to put out very good stuff.

    Good luck!

    Thanks!

Using some stuff I have, I went thru that video.
It didn''t really tell me WHY things worked, but I got close to the look I want to be able to have, so that's very encouraging!

Happy you feel you're getting there.

Understanding how it works can be done through rendering all lights separately, and how they combine to make this result.

The next step might be to understand how material settings affect the way they come out. In your case, I guess you will want to focus on skin and I suggest having a look at the Sugar Skin in Daz Studio tutorial on DA.

Not that you specifically want this result, but you will learn how things like ambient, specular glossiness and strength parameters on a texture affect your render, simply by toying around, and you will find that perfect real/unreal balance you're looking for.
