Artifact or "shadow" from haircap on close-cut hair

I have a couple different types of hair that leave this kind of artifact or translucent shell at the sides. (Using Iray.) This sample is the Vincent_Short_Hair, but it also happens with Pompadour Trend Hair. I can clean it up in photoshop but that's a PITA. Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks. I tried all of those without success, though I may try again from scratch with a fresh model and settings.

    It looks to me like the hair cap is too big.
