PSA: Best Buy RTX 3000s In-Store Only - Eastern Standard Time Daily Checks (20211001 - 20211231)

edited January 2022 in The Commons

(Only reason why I'm bothering with this is because the smart phone app on my iPhone for Best Buy actually hasn't notified me, as the Best Buy Chat Customer Service Represenative said it would, even once, about any of the RTX 3000 GPUs I've had in my wish list & saved list even though they had them in stock I know for sure on 2021 Oct 01)

I've decided to repurpose this thread I started to update the public service announcement (LOL, not really) with a ping as to whether Best Buy announces In-Store availibility for the RTX 3000s series cards on their Best Buy web site. Every evening (that I remember) at 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time USA.

If they do, I will post a link with the date on this initial post in the thread. The date will be in red for easy identification.

If they do not. I will post the date in green.

Because I think me updating this OP post in this thread will not bring it to the top I will also double post the daily delta for the OP post at the end of this thread, more to keep this thread easy for me and other RTX 3000s series prospective buyers to find than for any other reason. So on days on no In-Store Only sales the new post will just be +++++current date  - NO In-Store Only Sale tommorrow's date

Hope I don't miss one they post to their Best Buy site to notify you all but of course that's possible.

At the end of the year, we'll see just how many times between 20211001 - 20211231 Best Buy actually announces RTX 3000 series In-Store only sales with their "one per customer" ticket for a GPU limit.

This thread those has nothing to do with Online Only GPUs available at Best Buy. Those show up occasionally if you check regularly, usually as returns because those are typically not out on the floor and most customers are more hesitent to buy them.

UPDATE: To avoid confusion this summary line only refers to In-Store Only Sale Events where one must be at a brick & mortar store and receive a ticket. The other types of normal sales will be written up at the current latest post I make.

PSA: Best Buy RTX 3000 series In-Store Only - 2021 Oct 1st (Queues start at 07:30)  - While supplies last!

Link to find your local store if you are in the USA:

NVIDIA GeForce RTX Graphics Cards - Best Buy

Unfortunately crying, me having to repair a car I'm selling has drained my wallet but I'm sure this won't be the last of these events that Best Buy has between today and 31 Dec 2021 so there is that. These are the nVidia brand cards, not a 3rd party card, and they are at MSRP!

See attachment for summary of card types. Not pictured in the image below is the $599 nVidia GeForce RTX 3070 TI. It's a good bet each store will have a few of each type on hand but your guess is as good as mine as to how many. I also think part of this shortage is that nVidia has been holding back cards, and likely has many more coming in the next 3 months, just for such a purpose as this enables any typical customer to have as good as a shot as any to get a card in this way.

+++++ Addendum

+++++ 2021 Oct 07 - Unannounced: RTX 3000 Series Cards In Stock Online

GPUs: Graphics Cards & External GPUs - Best Buy

For those that had doubts about scalper bots, I stumbled on this online availability at about 3:00 PM. There were over a half dozen different RTX 3000 cards from different manufacterers available. By 4:00 all were sold. Best Buy did not roll out the cards they had all at once online but staggered them over the time period. I tried to get 2 different cards and got into two different queues, human style, and got neither because bots (almost exclusively) had already taken the queue spots ahead of me.

So there is no doubt that despite the efforts of these retailers to stop the scalper bots, they are failing. You best bet to get a non-scalped price for a card is via showing up early at one of their In-Store Only Sales and get in line for a ticket at store opening if you have that luxury.

If you want to do that, P.M. me and I will build a list of DAZ forum users names in a DAZ forum P.M. message thread and I will notify you and all in that P.M. group of the next Best Buy In-Store Only Sale (but not of the non-sale days like I do in this thread). Of course I might mess up and miss an announced In-Store Only sale but I'll try not too (between now & 31 Dec 2021 only).

  • Meanwhile at Amazon, 3090's are still selling at astronomical prices. There was a slight dip when China first clamped down on crypto mining but now they're even higher than before.

I wonder how many people are lining up at Best Buy with the intention of buying a card and immediately flipping it for a quick profit on Ebay or whatever. I could understand the temptation.

How much profit, though, when you have to also consider how much your time is worth? $15/hr? $20/hr? That's why I also question why people are spending days camped out in the hopes of buying a GPU for MSRP. Is it really worth it? I'll own up to it and just tell ya'll that I paid $2700 US for my 3090 FTW3 Ultra back in July. That's the lowest those cards have dipped (short of MSRP, of course). I bought it on Amazon and I got a Prime shipping and return guarantee. It was new. Was the $2700 above MSRP? Yes, of course...but in the realm of things...it was worth it (to me) considering the time investments people are making in trying to get these cards. I value my time way too much to sit and camp out twiddling my thumbs when I could otherwise be productive, and I'm sure not going to waste my vacation time to sit there either. Even the local builder I worked with (he put everything together for me because I'm too lazy to do it myself) said that $2700 wasn't all that bad considering.

A year later, buying RTX graphics cards are still a joke.  No thank you.

when they get down to $399 for the lower end one. 399/499/599/ and maybe 799 for the ultra supreme.

  • I was lucky with a RTX 3090. The retailer had an eGPU from Gigabyte with a RTX 3090 from a customer, return offered at almost the list price. Lucky me, these guys were not smart enough to take out the RTX card and sell it stand-alone.Instead, they were selling the whole gear at a 50% discount (which is about the list price of an RTX 3090).

That's indeed what the prices are. Except the $799 for Super Duper Wow model is not going to happen in the next few years.

... They are sold out now...I don't know what time the 3090s sold out but they are gone now too...

I actually bought a Dell Alienware PC last November (2020), pretty much JUST for the RTX 3090 - it was the only way I could get my hands on one!  I figured I'd slap my (then) current RTX2080Ti in the new machine and soup up my main render box with the 3090.  I now run my more complicated renders on the old box with the new 3090 (has a HUGE library of models from a lot of different stores/vendors) and run DAZ store only models in the new machine.  I wouldn't call it DOUBLE productivity, but rather, ENHANCED productivity.

    Livin' the dream!

...ah well, was sound asleep a 04:11 when this posted after not feeling very well yesterday. Didn't get to the Daz forums until about 15 min ago as I slept in a bit and the day was pretty much taken up with being a "concerned citizen".

I wouldn't doubt some folks were already camping out about then.   The closest one to where I live is a long bus ride with a transfer away and they don't run that early in the morning.. Would love a 3060, but at as close to the MSRP. as possible.

  • I built my PC around the 30 series GPUs 12 months ago ready for the big launch... but had to settle for 2070 super.

To be honest the 2070 has far surpassed my expectations in both studio and gaming so the wait hasn't been too bad and in the mean time it allowed me to save for a better 30 series but my absolute limit of £1500 for the very best just wasn't and still isn't enough so this week i settled for the next best thing and dropped £1300 on the 3080 Ti.

Obviously render times are much reduced but my absolute favorite thing about the upgrade is being able to work (for the most part) unimpeded in the iray viewport....(and i've still to put it through its paces on gaming duty!)

However with the cost of energy skyrocketing i'm sure my new purchase will continue to be a substantial drain on resources but on the flip side i'm not gonna have heat my apartment this winter! blush

I can't access that page via the link, I keep getting a "opps, something went wrong" notice... but either way I doubt any of the Best Buys near me would carry them... they are rather sparse in those departments... even way before the supply dried up.

Well, their time was apparently worth $1200.

It goes deeper than that. There is also the satisfaction of not buying from a low life scalper. IMO that value is priceless. Screw those creatures.

I can understand people who use their computer to make money paying the price. You will make it back, it is the same reason Quadro costs what it does. Quadro are professional GPUs and are typically bought by professionals who make money on those GPUs . But that's kind of the exception. Most people here are hobbiests who consider these products to be luxury items.

That's also why all GPUs cost what they do now. You can make money mining, and miners are snatching these things up. We might just buy 1 GPU, some of us have 2 and a few might even have 4. However there is no limit for mining. There are mining firms with thousands, even hundreds of thousands of GPUs in their farms. Scale that we have never seen before. Scale that dwarfs the world's largest super computers. They are buying their own power plants. That is how much money they have.

...given the prices for consumer cards, actually been considering an RTX A4000 and the mark-up is much smaller mostly due to just the chip shortage rather than mining or scalping on top of the chip issue.  For example A4000s are going for around 20% - 25% above MSRP whereas a 12 GB 3060 is going for between 100% - 200% over MSRP. For 4 more GB and twice the cores of the 3060 right now it is the better deal (and no having to camp out in front of a Best Buy overnight for a chance to get one at a "reasonable" price).

They (Best Buy) probably removed it after all the cards sold out.

Best Buy said that was just the 1st of multiple such sales they are planning. I take them at their word.

So I intend to check every evening between now & 31 Dec 2021 because I intend to buy a 3080, a 3070, or a 3060 TI at MSRP when they do it again. I'll post it here if I catch the Best Buy announcements in time as a reminder.

I wouldn't waste money on a 3070/3070TI or 3060TI as they only have 8GB's of VRAM

From my experience with my GTX 1650 I sold recently and what I actually use Blender & DAZ Studio to do, it's 4GB was enough 90% of the time so the 3070/3070TI/3060TI with 8GB are all enough for 99% of my use cases. When the sale(s) happen again, I'm going in with $750 and will try to buy a 3080 and from there work my way down until a card if available that I want.

....yeah the standard 3060 is what I am looking at as it is a slight cut above the Titan-X Specs wise and at 330$ MSRP (if they ever come down or even close to that) one heck of a deal.  For myself VRAM is more important than frame rate.

According to the benchmark thread, the 3060 is faster than 2080Ti

Those not in the USA, and even those in the USA, may want to go sign up for the EVGA.com RTX 3000 series order queue as I got an email from them stating they are changing the way their queue works. They stated they sent out emails to people in the wait queue on 4th of October. I did not receive such an email despite being in the queue since Sep 2020. They also state they recommend keeping the models that are FTW3 Ultra or XC3 Ultra in your requests to be notified for. Those of you that have searched eBay & Amazon for RTX 3000 series GPUs recognize the FTW3 Ultra and XC3 Ultra 3000s series models as being the most readily available and among the least marked up in price, although they still are marked up 100% and more over MSRP. That data then clearly shows the EVGA wait queue for RTX 3000 series cards is being gamed by scalpers.

They now limit those in the wait queue to 2 cards to be notified for. They stated anyone in the queue not notified for the Oct 4th availability of cards would be notified on the next batch of available cards. Ahem, that would be me. They recommend then, at least one of the FTW3 Ultra or XC3 Ultra as one of the cards to be notified for is chosen by you as supply constraints in manufacture means those two models are most easily manufactured and so available.

When I went to the link they included to edit my list of cards I want to be notified for, their server states "Try again in 15 minutes". There you have it. Another supplier of RTX 3000 series is refining their distribution so scalpers can't make off with all of them so easily so sign up, if you haven't already.

Here is the link to sign up & create a list of 2 cards you want notified for. Note that if you've already signed up, and haven't received a notice of card availability yet, they state you will be notified on the next batch but should sign into your account and edit your list to be only 2 cards. If you have received notice of a card's availability, whether you bought it or not, well you are now at the back of the queue.

...agh queue for the standard 12 GB 3060 has been disabled due to high demand (probably scalpers' bots). Just can't afford paying two and a half to three times the MSRP for one  I've even seen one going for the same price as the s MSRP for a 3090.  On eBay one has a starting bid of 599$, not a Buy it Now price..

Scalping tickets for events like concerts and sports is illegal here .Wish the same applied in this case.

How do you know it's bots, not legitimate humans, in the queue ahead of you?
