A bunch of my demon characters depend on HFS Ultimate Shapes, especially for hoof and leg morphs. Getting specific fantasy body morphs for any particular generation earlier than a few years in seems like it comes down to luck, and I got extremely lucky that those were available for G8. I'm considering learning R3DS Wrap to transfer my existing characters if nothing else is available, but I'm worried about managing the rigging for a non-standard leg shape. Maybe it's a good opportunity for me to work on figuring it out.

I've seen a few people mention that it was much easier to create creature figures for Genesis and it might be the same for G9, which is encouraging. I do really hope to see a lot of creative morphs early on, since it seems like it's going to be much easier to create different types of normal human characters out of the box. Because I'm now more experienced in knowing what I'll need, I don't want to bloat my morphs collection, and I really don't want to spend as much as I have on G8 stuff, I will probably be much more selective and focus on picking up products that give me lots of options for transforming the figure dramatically.

Okay, so how does one download this resizer? I tried the + link, that wanted me to sign in first, so okay, I signed in. That wasn't good enough, next it wanted to play some kind of cat and mouse game to find out if I'd ever had another account there. AND that they would be tracking everything about how their utility there was going to be used. For a powertoy, toy, this is ridiculous. They also wanted a user name which would be publically visible, to download something? Again, why and not happening. So unless I totally missed some detail, there are no download buttons for these powertoys.

That's Big Brother Comrade Microsoft wanting control

    Yeah ;-)

From another post I did get a better link to be able to download the Power Toys app from their app store. Then on another post there's a claim that one does not have to be signed in, well, no that doesn't work. The page with an apparent install button, no that link is to another page full of confusions! Bottom line is yes, their servers need to know whose computer their products are being installed on. Not a biggie this time though. I noticed that it was suggesting another username which happens to be what the computer has now so I gather that in their system they have 2 names for my one computer. And the old name [which I had tried to use on + link] wasn't cutting it. And the whole think was coming across as though I was signing up for I don't know what, to be a developer? That's not what I wanted. Anyways, PowerToys are now installed, most of them turned off - because apparently it was a package deal! So I kept the resizer and the bulk renamer. Some of the tools are more for developers.

Was there a FAQ coming today?   My eyes are crap. I can't find it.  Hopefully covering what's in the pre-order bundle, is the pre-order bundle the "Pro" bundle or will "Starter" and "Pro" bundles come later, will buying the pre-order bundle get us the super discounts on other releases that we'd normally get if we bought the "Pro" bundle on release day, and so on.

Not yet, but obviously it depends on someone being able to prepare it and having it checked to make sure it is correct (and not spilling any unintended beans).

Well, seeing as the Daz folks have already left for the day, I don't see a FAQ coming on THIS today. Maybe tomorrow today? Who knows what today? But I bet it'll be "today" when we get it.

I just hope we won't have to wait too long for things like centaurs, mermaids and toony characters.

  • I want a more useful michael 9. I used Michael 8's genetics a lot, Michael 8.1 came along and his face shape did not mix well with other figures, rendering him sort of not useful.

It would be nice to be able to use michael 9 as a base blend with other characters like his predecessors. Making him.

I want every DO Male 9 figure to have a set of fibermesh eyebrows.

Okay, I have to ask that.
First, I have to confess that the G9 with that unimesh system looks better than I expected.
The future will prove if the new generation can really create male-looking males and female-looking females. I had serious doubts about that, as biological there is nothing like the half-female/half-male they use as the base for Genesis 9.
But that is not my problem.
While it was asked in the chat of the stream if there will be gens and it was certified there will be gens coming with G9, I couldn't help but notice that the mesh had NO distinctive polygons for nipples.
Will the new generation still have them (I am not talking about the texture) or are they removed for good (or worse, for artists who want realistic figures)?

I'm stoked to have a figure that's closer to the way human bodies actually differ. I know people are typically looking for specific aesthetics to create characters they find appealing and that's understandable, and I imagine that if the figure isn't able to go super masc or super femme out of the box there will be plenty of solutions for that because it's popular. But my body shape is almost exactly the same as the G9 base, and I know more people in real life who look like that--not all of them trans--than I do people who look like the G8 bases, let alone most of the characters in the store.

One thing I'm hoping this will make easier is creating realistic fat women with smaller breast sizes, since most of the weight distribution morphs I like for the hips and stomach also add about 3 solid cup sizes, and trying to shrink the breasts can sometimes cause clothing issues as much as expanding them does. Women with blockier body shapes should be easier, too--I sometimes end up dialing in some of the G8M clone to create women with broad, rectangular body types and smaller breasts.

Thanks.  Mostly I wanted to be certain it didn't go to some place I don't usually check.  I imagine it'll be posted as a thread in the commons and maybe a link on the promo page. And, sure, if they hadn't planned on an FAQ with the pre-order then it could take a couple days to a week to line the ducks up.  And some of the decisions may not even be able to be made yet.  Unfortunately, it puts a big question mark on the value of the pre-order for many so hopefully the pre-order will last up until release (or at least day or two after the FAQ is posted).

    Thanks.

  • I have a small concern about Gen 9 unimesh. I've seen this before with Gen1. At that time, there was huge amounts of hype about how great a unimesh character was and how this would solve many problems. Then they split the mesh again with even more hype in Gen 2 saying it was better for creating realistic characters. So, I'm hoping Gen 10 doesn't split the meshes again after loading the boat with content for Gen 9. Other than that, this is the VERY FIRST Victoria that I like out of ALL the previous ones. Simply fabulous!

  • not sure if this has been asked, there are frekken 6 pages of unanswered questions FFS

Is the geometry displayed here https://www.daz3d.com/daz-3d-prerelease next to "Unified Figure" title representative of the geometry in the new base figure?

If so, then I can't see how it would produce realistic nipples, will these become geographs?

Also, what is happening with male/female genitals? Any information?

New Genesis figure, start with a clean slate.  smiley

1 - Ensure "Duplicate formulas" problem doesn't get past QA, at least for Daz items.  We now know this can lead to some really, really long load times.

2 - Enforce some QC on the images.  I have quite a few characters from PA's where there was way too much JPG compression used.  The lossy artifacting was REALLY bad, judging from the file size looks like they used max compression.  It's so bad I'd bet a 2048x2048 PNG or TIF file would look better than the 4096x4096 JPG.

  • In my mind, there's two questions here.

First, do I want to (at some point) get the Genesis 9/Victoria 9 characters? Sure, the images in the presentation yesterday were impressive.

The second question is do I need to upgrade my library to Genesis 9 characters, different clothing, different hair, etc?  That answer is no, I have plenty of G8 and G3 resources that I can use.

From what I see now, there the added detail in closeups are not enough of a benefit to justify spending buckets of money on new characters, clothes and other add ons.  If I see down the road that there are converters and capabilities that make it possible to move my existing resources over to Genesis 9 then I'll reconsider.

  • A wish:

    1. Improved posing of the arms and neck.  So far, I'm encouraged about this.

Two practices I wish would become standard for PAs:

    2. The option for face textures without eyebrows.  Some PAs produce characters with good brows, but many PAs are still producing fibermesh brows that look like eyebrow toupees that have been glued on or held on with velcro.  Easier for me to start with a clean slate and use brows from a specialty pack.

    3.  Include 4K materials as an option.  For those of us who aren't into the whole microdetail/'pore porn' thing of extreme closeups, 8K will strain our systems and slow things down for no benefit in our finished renders.  Easier if PA's provide the 4K materials than me going through steps to downscale/degrade.

    A concern:

    4.  With no separate female/male character bases, will figure load times get worse?  If you want Genesis 9 Male, are dozens/hundreds of female morphs that won't be used going to load unnecessarily?

The unified sex is actually pretty simple if you look at what they did. The base Genesis 9 is neither male or female. It is halfway between. So the shift to full female or full male is not as jarring as it was from the original Genesis 1 shape, since either way the PA goes for clothing they are halfway there!

Kind of brilliant to be honest.

See, I am not always a negative Nancy! I call it how I see it.

As for textures guys, Scene Optimizer has been around since 2017.

    https://www.daz3d.com/scene-optimizer

It can automate the whole thing for you. Aside from that, I used to the Power Toys add on for Windows that can resize textures wholesale in a flash. You can save them as new files or overwrite the originals. Just overwrite the originals and boom, it is done. The tool was so fast that I could do entire folders with dozens of textures in seconds. And this was when I had a 4690k, not anything special. How easy is it to use? How does right clicking sound? The Power Toy menu is added to your right click. That's it. You can highlight a few textures or highlight them all, and right click. Select the size and quality. It really is a fun tool! It has other fun tools as well, which you can pick to use or not, like "Always on Top" and "Text Extractor".

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/image-resizer

Just look at how easy and fast this is.

I don't know why you got any of that. I clicked on install, from there I clicked on the one that took me to a Github page. Then clicked on the x64.exe version. It downloaded and that install never asked for anything. The install EULA didn't mention it either.

Here is a link directly to the Github page.

    https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/releases/tag/v0.62.1

Hopefully that will get you there.

Power Toys is very old. I was using this on XP, and it might even go farther back than that. It has changed over the years. I think there was a time when it was kind of abandoned. But a small group of people picked it up and continued it so that it would keep working on newer Windows. I could be wrong, my memory might be hazy. But the resizer basically works the same way it always has, and is seriously one of the most useful tools I have. Just think about it, you can resize any image without needing to boot up another program. Even using XnView is not as fast, and XNView doesn't do batches like the Power Toy can. And the actual speed that it takes to execute the resizing is just stupidly fast.

On that note, people should be rejoicing that Victoria 9 has 8K textures. If you want quality, well, you have to have quality. There s no substitute. While you can get away with lesser textures they can show up in larger renders. If you render at say 1080p, maybe nobody will notice, but going higher it becomes clearer.

I can understand wanting to downsize textures for memory. I have been there. I had a 670, and I was stoked to double my VRAM to a 970 4GB, LOL. That was when I got a lot of use out the Power Toy Resizer. That little tool was a major part of my Daz experience. I'd buy something and the first thing I would do is resize those textures. That resizer made quick work of the task, too. But at the same time, I still appreciated having access to larger textures, because I hoped one day to get past that.

So I don't understand the pushback against 8K textures. We should be celebrate that. If your system can't handle them, the tools are out there so you can. Scene Optimzer has been mentioned multiple times now, including by me. You have options, and having options is important to me. If the textures are small to begin with, it is MUCH harder to get that detail. Trust me. If any of the people complaining about 8K textures ever do pick up something like a 3090, they will be preaching a different tune when they see the compression in their larger renders.

3D art is not easy. Daz Studio makes it easier than probably anything else, but it still requires some tweaking from time to time. There is no "make art button". Well, unless you count the new AI picture generators where you can literally type something and click a button to make those words into art. But in this world, you have to accept that technology is constantly changing. 10 years in technology is a super long time, as any PC built in 2012 is now pretty weak for Daz Studio. No GPU built in 2012 can even run Iray now! The 600 series was released in 2012 and now it has been dropped from Iray support. The 900 series (Maxwell) is on the chopping block. That is just how the tech world moves. And Daz-Tafi has to do that as well. Daz cannot remain in the past forever, they have to move forward or somebody will happily take their place. Daz must compete with the likes of Epic's Metahuman, which might seem small now, but Daz is the underdog in that fight, not Epic. Epic is worth billions. So Daz must make sure their models are compatible with software that others use, because those companies set the standards. And Daz models have to bring quality, they have to be better than everybody else. That is why I can be antogonistic towards them at times, because sometimes I don't believe they are putting their best out there.

So did yesterday's announcement come as a surprise to everyone at Daz?  And what's this about spilling  unintended beans?  The more information Daz withholds at this point, the more FUD there will be concerning G9.

Its not the texture maps that's 8K, its the skin details maps and those don't load by default. The skin detail maps are normal maps that are loaded in the PBR skin shader under the detail section, normal map channel.

If you don't want to load them you don't have to, and if its for a figure in the distance it would be silly to load them - its really for close up details. :)

Great figure but not for me. If it means getting some super machine to use it then this isn't a hobby anymore.

Why do you think it will need a super machine? The emsh resolution was said to have doubled - I'm not sure if that is literal or approximate but it should be no mor than one division level, so just knock the Viewport divsiions down to 0 and render to 2 or three instead of three or four. Map size should be avoidable, the Viewport uses reduced resolutioin by default and Iray can compress even if you don't want to use the likes of Scene Optimiser.

I think Richard is spot on here. I mentioned earlier that we may have to up our game when it comes to computers. What I was referring to is the V9's 8K textures.

When I want to fit something better into my GPU's RAM, I use an app called Irfanview, which is free for personal use. It's an image viewer with many editing possibilies. In this case, it has a batch mode for making edits like resolution. So I can make a new folder within the main texture folder to save the originals, then batch those to 50 or even 25% their original size directly into the main folder that the product will load from. Voila... instant GPU RAM savings!

The mesh is a genius design. Check out the Masculine to Feminine slider on this page.

What I want you to look at is how the changes come about from the original shape. The edge loops and quad placement of the base shape is just mind-blowingly simple looking, but very masterfully thought out. This figure will be able to withstand a Lot of change! I'm So looking forward to this! Probably get back to publishing products at Daz 3d because of it!

I am sure there is enough mesh for third parties to release free nonHD morph nipples for those not wanting to buy anything and just render naked base figures cheeky

Actually, this is the most likely reason nipples are no longer part of the geometry, isn't it? It seems obvious now that I think about it, but playing with the slider I noticed the topology where they would be located doesn't change at all. That the female model basically has a breast shape baked into the pecs is one of the biggest reasons trying to create custom male character shapes on the female base never quite worked to my satisfaction. The G8F clone shape on a male base gets closer to the shape of a breast--and the nipple position just makes it look like gravity is doing its thing--but the male clone shape on a female base has larger, higher-placed nipples than the male base figure, and there's a noticeable difference in the way male textures look between them. You can flatten the chest out, but once you start trying to add muscle definition there or make the nipples smaller it gets considerably harder, mostly because there's breast geometry underneath the nipple that does not want to move in if the area above it is sticking out. It's easier to stretch that much smaller area on G8M than to compress it on G8F.
