Does using iray shaders on older 3delight clothing help a scene?

So when trying to do an Iray scene and you want to use some M4 and V4 characters and their clothing, can you change the older clothing shaders that isn't iray into iray using iray textures to help the scene render faster and look better for the scene?

If a material isn't Iray compatible when rendering with Iray, DS will try to autoconvert the materials.

But some materials will convert incorrectly, and in my view it is better to convert yourself, so you can adjust as needed.

Render speed should be similar whether you convert it or not.

Auto-conversion works only with the main, known 3Delight shaders - any custom shaders will not be converted at all.

  • Yup, I had no end of trouble converting by hand the many shader surfaces on a certain Genesis-era chrome android figure, becuase most of it just showed up white instead of the retro-future chrome it was supposed to,

everything glossy / metallic and 3dlight shader presets which have ambient need manual adjustment rather than let them autoconvert. Using the Iray uber helps a lot on the way but adjusting metallic aspects and emissive need to be done by hand and often it's easier for metallic surfaces to find a fresh iray metallic shader preset

I've found this product to be very helpful: https://www.daz3d.com/da-iray-fabric-shaders-leather-and-cloth It has separate settings that can really breath some life into clothes. You can use the original map for the diffuse, but set tiling options for things like translucency and normals fabric texture. Plus there are easy settings to add and remove glossiness.
