Which Image Hosting Sites are Best/Safest?

McGyverMcGyver Posts: 7,053

Image uploading is clearly broken and I guess this is our life now, but thats understandable because this isn't necessarily a website related to visual art or anything image related, so that makes sense... regardless of whether that was satirical commentary or just me being a sarcastic wiseass, I'm feeling like that for the foreseeable future this is going to be an ongoing problem and being that I'm probably not the only one who's grown used to modern websites having the ability to have images uploaded to them and sans that option, I and probably one or two others may be wondering what the next best option is, which presumably would be to upload your images elsewhere and link them to whatever post you make*.

That being the case, if anyone who is more experienced in this has any suggestions about which is the best and or safest it would, be good to know and helpful to a bunch of folks... It probably seems lame to ask about this, but honestly I've never really needed to do it except for the early 2000s at a video game forum where I needed to use TinyPics or something for an image... otherwise most websites that I visit surprisingly have functional image uploading...

So thanks in advance for any help, info or insight you can offer.

*Yes, honestly offsite hosting is not a great option... Why? Because most of DAZ's troubleshooting is done by forum members and often that troubleshooting involves uploading an image, either to explain a problem or to solve one... and over time images hosted elsewhere will expire, rot or otherwise disappear and when someone has a similar problem a few months or a year later and they Google the problem, the thread which featured a bunch of helpful images will be broken and useless and the person will ask the question again, possibly making the issue more confusing to others who search for the solution... or worse yet, someone will reference the broken thread creating unnecessary complications... the original poster, or new members may or may not bother to rely on the forums for help...
I could make a comment about how perhaps forum members doing troubleshooting and helping each other with problems is possibly not appreciated or viewed as a priority at a visual art forum by the people who make the big decisions, but I'm going to avoid saying that and point out that if there is a suggestion box on the wall at 224 S 200, and there's someone who works there and reads this and possibly agrees having forum members give added value to the product by doing fairly quick product support, you may want to paraphrase some of that concept and anonymously drop a note in there, because this is a visual art site and forum members use the site to post image based tutorials, troubleshooting information, product support help and works in progress... and having missing images and broken/rotted image links is very... I dunno... "last century" and not very professional looking... But whatever (maybe it's just me, or the fact the site froze three times while writing this).

I tend to post to my daz gallery to use as a host for forum images. The gallery still works for now.  oh shoot,  disregard everything I just mentioned.

I agree that it would be good if Daz can put a few more coins in the meter to buy a bit more space so that image uploads will work again. Having images hosted on third-party sites is not ideal as it may lead to broken links at some point down the road.

For other sites, I suppose it depends on what the image is used for. My actual renders are uploaded to the Daz Gallery (which thankfully still works) and linked to the post from there. For the more "throw-away" images that are illustrating comments I currently just use Imgr - mainly because that is the name that comes to mind when I think of image hosting.

I was considering something like that one of the other times image uploading was broken... (but there was some reason I didn't do it)... What do you do?
Do you just upload the image to a random old post or is there something like the "Thread for Images" in the Art Studio forum?

Mostly I upload my 'art', such as it is, in an appropriate gallery (I have a 'pets of the community ' image too) and then link the images, as below:

Not appropriate for every image one might want to upload, but it works.

    Regards,

    Richard

I find that uploading to the DAZ gallery works even for images you don't publish to the gallery. So just upload the image, save it (but don't publish it unless you want to), and then use the image's link for posting in the forums.

I didn't know about the save option thanks for clarifying, I'm going to try that out for the next image.

I did post this one to the Daz gallery and linking it here is still quicker than a third party site.

Actual art goes to DeviantArt. Tests also go to DeviantArt, but to my scraps folder. Trash goes to Imgur.

i didnt read the op (too long) nor the responses, but if it hasnt been said yet, just use the daz gallery.

If you draft a post and dont publish, links to pictures still work.

But to answer the initial question, Image hosting site I would use imgur.com. Of course, read the terms of service.

I recommend it because the stack exchange site has an arrangement to have long-term image hosting so the answer's images are not broken.

I hate imgur with a passion.

If I make a mistake and click a link that ends up there there's 5 video ads running with sound and countless hundreds of other ads, and the image I wanted to see might not even be there anymore. And that is just for the links I've seen here on this forum.

I go out of my way to avoid it. I have it blocked at my router on my art machine.

I'd rather not ever be able to post images again if imgur is the only option.

That said, I'll take anything else.

Even running a small server on my own PC to host my own images.

Since the 2 days I tried to upload anything to the Gallery, said uploads would not take, I've been using DeviantArt. Then posting a link to the page 'cause I'm not sure on their policies with regards to hotlinking. Links to the page are safe ways to share though.

I use Imgur for junk images and I haven't seen a single ad with the ad blocker I use.

We reinformed Daz of all the forum issues yesterday.

I also use the Daz Gallery to embed an image link in a forum post. I've never had any trouble that others have reported.

Imgur, Rendo, Deviant Art ... haven't come across Behance and Art Station. Does anyone here post to those?

    Cheers!

I am patiently waiting for this to turn into the "All Image Hosting Sites Suck" complaint thread.
