Julius 9

I almost missed him with all the banners.

https://www.daz3d.com/julius-9-hd-pro-bundle

He looks very middle-eastern (to me!) in some of the promos, nice to see.

I live in hope for a banner. I'm enjoying the alternative shapes so far

Like his looks. Good character actor type. I hadn't cashed in my DAZ+ coupon yet, either. And for members the bundle isn't exhorbitant. I'll probably get the pro bundle this time, even thoulgh I've little use for the specifically Roman stuff. (Looks nice, Just don't have the need).

It's another fairly popular genre, though. There's a venror over on Rendo who is making quite a specialty of Roman props, sets and general stuff.

Yay.  I favor historical content.  It seems like they are still loading the sale specifics at this time, so I will wait to see my best options, but I will be getting the Praefectus Outfit, Janus Weapons, and Roman Forum at a minimum.  Remains to be seen whether that will be best with a Julius Pro Bundle, Starter Bundle, Mega Bundle, or just purchased individually.  The genesis 9 character Julius 9 looks like a good addition to the G9 gene pool, so I expect to be getting a bundle of some sort.  Fingers crossed for some linked sales to other historical items.

To the historians among us, do the outfit and weapons look authentic to the period, or do they look more fantasy?

If the pricing that's showing now persists, I'd be surprised to see banners. (Pleased, but surprised.) At the moment, his pro bundle price seems to be less than half that of other recent pro bundles.

There may exist contemporary portrait statues of Julius Caesar. The one below is identified as Julius and is in the Vatican Museum. This statue may well be the primary source for the sculpt for the character above (certainly looks close regardless of skin texture colour):

However, look at this article as to the provenance of some of the 'Julius' statues and how different they look: https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/history-and-civilisation/2022/01/will-the-real-julius-caesar-please-stand-up

As for the armour - I couldn't find an image of a Roman armoured torso perported to be Julius, but the one below is claimed to be Augustus Caesar, who died 58 years later. That statue was unearthed in Augustus' third wife's villa, so is fairly well attributed

So, with the less ornate cuirass on the Julius character above, that looks relatively in keeping. However, I thought at the time the scutum's (shield's) had sharp corners, and the shoulder plates look peculiar to me, see Augustus' statue above for something more like what I'd expect. Furthermore, Julius probably wouldn't have been in the melee, so wouldn't need to carry an unsheathed gladius (sword) or need to carry a scutum either at the point he looked as old as the character.

    Regards,

    Richard

I can't speak for the other pieces, but my outfit is pure fantasy - there's some elements that's from reference but some of it is not :)

Jeremy Renner mixed with a little bit of Daniel Craig. A hunk for sure, just not my cup of tea.

His exclusive "young" morph doesn't even look that young but I'm going to blame the textures for that one. Otherwise, it looks like a good base for an OC of mine. Oh well, the one promo pic and that's it's basically behind the paywall of a pro bundle, is an automatic pass for me. It may be cheaper later. Oh well.

The price looks good for the release day.

Got no banners. That really kills my last ounce of interest in getting him. Fine with me though.

Yeah, when I say I favor historical content, I generally mean the not-very-historical 'Hollywood' version of history.  An actual Roman soldier on campaign spent most of his time marching and digging, so the most important props would be distinctive sandals (caligae) and small shovels (batillum) in an equipment pack (sarcina) carried like a crossbar.  In fairness to creators, the Romans army was active for several centuries of time and in a wide variety of operational environments, so there was a range for what was standard even for formal legionaires, setting aside auxileries.

EDIT:  Here is a page with an image of a sarcina for those who are interested.  https://www.romanobritain.org/8-military/mil_roman_soldiers_gear.php

The helmet of the 'praefectus' is approximately that of a centurion, but the prefects of an army camp usually came from the rank of centurions. The very plain sandals do not match the rest of the lavish outfit and are 'un-Roman'. The rest of this outfit is good, but still somewhat fanciful. The weapons and shield are very good.

Julius C. himself is pretty good as a character, but also as a portrait.

I'm very curious about the forum; it's about to go into my cart.

A Roman with a beard seems a bit anachronistic to me. A fine looking character, though. But I really hate this hiding the alternate shades in Pro bundles.

The '50% off historical wearables' link leads to bend control morphs, breast utilities, modern weapons 2, and summer swimwear for G8M.  But I don't see the supposedly historical wearables.

Mentioned in "What's Included and Features" and this Promo pic.

Bundle exclusives do not have their own product pages, therefore no thumbnail-links to them.

Thank you all for the historical pointers. Love the inspro the Daz sculptor has taken from the stone sculptures! Defs makes for an interesting character.

The Pro Bundle did come down when I added all the tokens and 2 of the lower cost new releases and the Daz+ coupon, so I am now the proud owner of the Pro Bundle. Look forward to playing with it tonight.

(Someone had a lot of fun making those spy props)

So far I can say the alt shapes are nice but don't provide a huge amount of variation on the core figure, and accurate to the promo pictures.

No worries, Mada. The outfit still looks super quality to me! I'll have to keep it for a roman god character in the near future

He has an interesting face. The pecs are oddly shaped with the overly defined undercrease I've come to expect from G9's breast reduction and reshaping. The Zander hair is nice, too bad it's not for G8/8.1M, too.

He reminds me of a young Sir Laurence Olivier. I like his look, and Genesis 9 needs some beefing up.

    The semi-traditional Nikolai-mix.
    Elder Julius + 50% Nikolai

I think he could probably have you killed if you upset him

There was no taboo neither it was considered inappropriate to wear beards in Greece and Rome. It was a matter of fashion and choice. See Philip The Second and Marcus Aurelius. A Roman or a Greeek with a beard is fine, unless you want to specifically depict one known for not wearing a beard.

100% Hollywood. But there are accurate Roman clothes available elsewhere so it's not a big deal (but they will need conversion from G8M). Only it makes any bundles less desirable (if you care, because there are so many fantasy Medieval armors out there that there's nothing bad with having fantasy Ancient ones as well).

  • Are there any renders of what Julius 9 looks like as a woman? I imagine the skin texture would be bad for that -- it looks like there isn't an option without the facial hair.

  • Serene NightSerene Night Posts: 17,651

I'm passing on this one. I am not really needing more of this type of character (middle aged craggy, character type) and don't need unisex hair. Ash hair looks good though.
