How to recover skin texture?

kwanniekwannie Posts: 865

How do you recover skin texture of a character if you accidentally delete the character while working on a scene? If I just undelete the character is restore but just comes back completely white. Is there any was to restore the skin texture to the state it was in just pror to the accidental delete?

Undo should restore everything, are the other elements in the scene properly textured (assuming there are other elements)? If you are using the iray preview mode it may be that the marked change in what it is being asked to draw has slowed or stalled it, and you are just getting the smooth shaded preview shown before Iray draws (in which case saving your work and restarting DS should fix it).

Well I tried saving the scene and the character still came back completly white. I looked in the surfaces tab and all the texture maps are still there but  any adjustments made have zero effect the character remains white. I tried to just apply charater materials from the character folder and it will not even apply the materials........just remains white.

    No Geoshells?

nemesis a Geoshell is exactly what it looks like. But I checked and noe Geoshell is in the scene. It will not let me apply any texture to the character at all after I undid the delete. All the texture maps and and settings are still intact  but character is white like a block of marble.

What happens if you hit ctrl 9 (cmd 9 on a Mac), or do a render?

You should recheck if there is a geoshell somewhere on the character, or maybe on a geograft attached to the character. What you are seeing, ie the character going all white, is normally caused by a geoshell.

What happens after a delete is that the geoshell is reset, and not restored during the undo. To get round this you have to reapply a texture to the geoshell, and also check the "shell" settings in the parameters tab of the geoshell to ensure that the shell is off for all surfaces that it is not supposed to apply to.

Try loading a new G9 and copy+pasting the surfaces from your one to the new one.

If that works - try copy+pasting back from new to old.

(I know there's no reason this should work ... but it did for me recently when something similar happened).

I was able to save the skin as a material preset and apply it to another character. I tried to save character I delete and undelete as a shaping prest thinking I could just apply the shape to a new character, but it saves as a scene subset character that cannot have texture applied to it. How do you save just the morphs without saving an entire character

Save as a shaping or shape preset, can't remember which since I am not at my PC

This happens to me quite often and Undo does not restore all the surfaces or some surfaces come back glowing like hot pokers. So I have started getting into the habit of creating Mat presets for skins (and shells). I might be a bit unusual since I rarely use characters as they are delivered. I almost always use commercial characters as part of a mix resulting in a unique character for my scenes. I often tinker with surface settings too, attempting to get more or less SSS or sheen, etc. Plus I add details and overlays using Skin Builder 8 (I don't have any G9 characters).

Ive had this happeneing at a disturbing rate lately, usually with skins that Ive altered. So if I use a LIE sumfin and it makes it a temp file a surprising many, but not all, are gone, completely gone even from the temp folder, when I reopen a project even a few hours or day after. Curious, and annoying.

I'd question the version of Daz you're using since that also might be a glitch of the program.

Yes, the temp file is emptied now and then. If one wants a texture in there to be kept, copy it and paste it over into a Runtime > textures > some subfolder ... This can then be used for mat files [faster than loading L.I.E. files].

I have had this happen several times before so I just closed out DAZ and started over. This time I finally found something that I had in the scene before had a geoshell attached to it and even though the item was delete the geoshell was there. After I delete then restored all ot the geoshell were set to on. I did an expand all in the scene tab and found the rougue culprit. Thanks for the tips to help solve this issue.

Is the surface by chance still showing Iray? There may be some setting that is enabled that is overriding everything else.

It is good to save frequently before making any big changes like deleting a character. If you save a scene after deleting a character, you aren't getting them back. Sometimes Undo goofs up.

But I cannot recall having this problem. I have had some come back with 'thin walled' enabled for some reason, which is why they would appear to glow in renders. If that happens, all you have to do is toggle the thin walled to off and you previous SSS settings are all still there.

I wonder if memory is playing a role in this. Like I said, I don't have this problem, and I have customized characters with multiple 8K textures. How much RAM and VRAM do you have? And what version of DS are you using? It could be that version. Also, some material sets use temp files, like LIE, maybe that could be causing an issue. I never use LIE. If I have something with LIE, I just blend the textures together into one texture and use that. I don't have a good reason why I do that, I just prefer to have all my textures where I can see them. But perhaps that is why I never have this issue?

Nice info here, thanks. I hadn't thought of looking at the "Thin Walled" setting but that makes sense. Otherwise, deleting figures is often accidental - especially if you play in the timeline. For some unfathomable reason, trying to delete a keyframe using the Delete key results in deleting whatever object is selected in the scene. Soooo annoying!

I was wondering how someone "accidentally" deletes a character, but I rarely play with the animation tools other than timelines for dforce drapes, so maybe that is the reason.

Solved.... It was a Geoshell left over fom a a deleted geograph. The shell was turned on for all parts of the character of the delete was undeleted.

It can also happen when one intends to delete a word used for filtering the dials (and the mouse moves ever so slightly). I have done it a few times but learned my lesson and using backspace instead now.
