Using shaders

I am accustomed to double-click a "material" to configure the chosen model surface. This always worked as planned. New models come with "shaders" instead of the old "materials". When I try to use them as I used the materials, nothing happens (except an execution window pop-up which immediately disappears). I even tried to render the preview window (with iray), but the shader is absent.

Please help me: how to apply shaders to a chosen model surface?

    Shaders require that both an object (or objects) and its (or their) surface (or surfaces) that you want the shader to be applied to be select.  Using the Surface Select tool will automatically select the surface's object.
