Hi

For some reason the linked files such as cr2, obz and textures for the G2 characters cannot be found by Carrara during import.

Can anyone please tell me Why?/!

    You need the DS-format versions.

Thanks for the info. But is DS not for the Daz Syudio version? Will it actually work in Carrara?

    Thanks.

    Hello Cobus

Carrara is fairly mature for the M4 & V4 figures, but there are still some issues with G2M & G2F.
They can be used very well, but may need work arounds to get what you want.

Diomede has started a thread, which I recommend that you read through so you can understand better
    how to approach the subject.

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/45361/

If you are having trouble locating the figures, refer this thread:-
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47314/

For Genesis, G2F, & G2M, I normally create my scene within DAZ3D, save as a DUF file and also
saving it to my DAZ3D Scene folder so Carrara can easily find it.

Sometimes there are issues, especially with clothes, Poke-Away is highly recommended.
    http://www.daz3d.com/poke-away2-for-genesis-2-bundle

Alternative is to save your figure and clothes setup as an obj and import it.
Although you will then have an object (prop) instead of a figure.

    Hope this helps !!!!!!

    Regards, Bunyip

Hi -- thank you for the very valuable info!

Besides the G2 characters –i ma not sure in which direction to move in terms of characters. We now have M6 and ,6, and then there are the new Genesis characters. Which rout would you recommend?

    Hmmmm

How long is a piece of string ?

That gets down to what direction you want to take with Carrara, and there are many directions it is possible in going.

If you can I would recommend that you join in on one of the Carrara Challenges.

These are to help people learn how to use Carrara and have heaps of fun while doing so.
I had tinkered with Carrara, but it was only when I entered one of the Challenges that I really started to progress.
I'm now bordering between Regular & Newbie status, but still got heaps to learn.

Reading/looking through the previous challenges is well worth the effort.
There are excellent ideas as well as many "how to do's....." through those pages.

As regards models, you can use a wide variety of models in Carrara via the import feature.
I have used Bryce models in Carrara, in addition to the DAZ3D/Poser models.
Carrara also has a modelling system that many of the other users are achieving excellent results with.

Learning how to use the shader system in Carrara is a must-do !!!!!!

There are quite a few tutorials available for Carrara.
The Infinite Skills by PhilW are excellent and well worth it if you can afford them.

Cripeman has also done a series of tutorials and at a price everyone can afford !!!!!!

Wow, tnank you for the wonderful list of resources.

It seems to me that Genesis offers more free resources.

Mike 6 looks very good, but I assume that one needs to buy clothes and hair all over again (I have built up a vast library for Mike and Vickie 3). Starting to work with new characters is always a financial issue in terms of extras.

One of the advantages of Genesis and Genesis2 figures is that you can use clothes intended for older generations using the Autofit facilities. I have to admit that these work better in DS than in Carrara, but they quite often do work OK in Carrara so it is certainly worth a try. You need to have the correct Shapes for Genesis or G2 for the clothes that you are fitting (eg. https://www.daz3d.com/v4-and-m4-shapes-for-genesis). There is also a free tutorial (for DS) on using Autofit.

I would like to reinforce what Bunyip and PhilW have pointed out.

    - You can use Genesis and Genesis2 figures and content in Carrara. Rather than purchase all of your content over again, it is possible to just purchase the clones (eg. generation 3 figure clones to Genesis allow Aiko 3 clothes to be used on Vicki5, Aiko5, etc.). Furthermore, because I have a utility called Wardrobe Wizard by PhilC (not to be confused with our PhilW), I have been able to convert clothes for many non-Daz figures for use with Genesis and Genesis2 figures. For example, here is a Viking outfit designed for the Poser7 male converted for use with Genesis and Genesis2. Ignore the colors, I was just testing the shape conversion. The colors work fine.

    - Don't underestimate what can be done with Michael 4, Victoria 4, and similar characters. The key will be good skin shaders, which you can get from Ringomonfort, GKDantas, and other artists until you learn how to do them yourself. Carrara's vertex modeler has additional tools to work with those figures (such as editing the posed position), which allows for greater precision.

Thank you very much for your reply. I must say, The auto fit feature is a great scoop for the Genesis figures.

Your clothing conversion is pretty darn good. I purchase Wardrobe W a long time ago -- never used it because I had a nice archive of goods for M3 and V3, but I guess it is about time to move on! Is it easy to use?

If I understand correctly, Genesis is included with Carrara 8.5?

Yes Genesis, along with the M5 and V5 pro bundles , is inlcuded in Carrara 8.5 pro. I just started messing around with Carrara this last weekend and it was good to see not only that but the fact that a LOT of my daz content library made it over for use in Carrara. I will need to do a lot of learning on lighting and shaders particularly.
