.Rib file is 500 MB?

I'm rendering to RIB...and I'm getting a 500 MB Rib file....

That doesn't seem right.

    What's all in the scene?

    When a RIB is written, it includes all the geometry, settings, lights, etc...basically anything that isn't a shader or texture file. And yes, if the item is set to subdivide, that too...

    I've had some 100+ MB ones from what I thought were pretty simple scenes.

    7 people, 3 droids, 1 walker, and some sceneory.

    I guess I just never noticed the size.

    It was so big, my text editor couldn't do a bulk replace on the paths as we talked bout the other week, which is why I looked at the size.

    Yeah....that sounds about right.

    But if you are having trouble with the replace you can either do layers (parts of the scene at a time) or find another text editor.

    One of the 'ultimate' editors...emacs does have a Mac version.

    I use Text Wrangler, which is just about the best mac text editor there is (second to it's big brother program BBEdit).

    Just hit a memory error trying to do a replace all on a 500 mb file. (I'll hAVE TO Check with the company on that..I have the RAM for it)..
    repeatedly hitting Replace took care of it.just not as automatic as I wanted. :/

    I tried Mac Vim and it was able to pull it off. Cool!

    Nice...but I don't recall Stormtroopers having 'bumpy bits' up front....

    Vim and Emacs will basically use as much RAM as it takes to get the file open...BBEdit would probably do it, too...but most editors do have some sort of memory limit.

    I have yet to find a file that doesn't work with either Vim or Emacs.

    Best I can find on Text Wrangler is it's hitting a Mac limitation, but that seems to be old data.

    MacVim is a bit weird as it's both a vi text editor, but responds to the mac side stuff. I haven't used vi in soooo long (that I think it evolved into vim since I did). Good to have in the toolbox for a rainy day.
