What's this AdRoll stuff about?
![McGyver](https://forum.daz3d.com/forums/uploads/userpics/505/n5EEAD18B6AD5.jpg)
I'm assuming this is something new since this is the first time I've ever seen this, but today while attempting to access the forums on my iPhone, I was confronted by this message:
" Accept and Close X
Your browser blocks 3rd party cookies by default. Click on this page to allow 3rd party cookies from our partner AdRoll to help tailor ads you see. Learn about 3rd party ads or opt out of AdRoll cookies by clicking HERE. This message only appears once."
Aaah... Where to begin...
- On a phone, the message blocks two thirds of the screen, so ignoring it and using the site without agreeing is not practical (if even possible).
- There is a reason I block third party cookies and its pretty clear...I don't want any ads "Tailored" for me, because I don't want any ads or anyone mining my data and spying on my habits... I hate ads, ads suck, everything everywhere is nothing but stupid unsupervised ads and I hate them gnawing on my nerves... What are unsupervised ads?
Ones that allow any sleezy site pretending to be a legit business to belong to the "partners" advertising with them... Almost nobody monitors this, and 3rd party ads are rotten with these crooks.
- The message is a loop... Opt out and you get to read it again... And again, and again.
- Accept and close via the close window "X".... Sleezy dude. Really. My natural reaction to close windows like that by hitting the X almost got me to accept that crap.
- While I don't mind an ad from DAZ, but there is no sharing my info, NO THANKS.
- From what I can tell, AdRoll is partnered with DoubleClick which I DO NOT WANT TOUCHING MY DATA... If you don't know who the are, I suggest looking them up and why people are critical of their practices.
So... That was while I was out at a doctor's visit... Now I come home and pick up my iPad and check my website data which I happened to clear yesterday, and sure enough AdRoll has deposited it's cookies there, sans my permission, from my one visit here this morning.
I frequently go though my website data and as far as I'm aware, AdRoll has never appeared there before at any time in recent memory, which despite my frequent jokes, is actually quite good...
Anyone know what's up with this, or has seen this too?
Comments
Nothing here. Have you visited any other sites that may have snuck that one up on you
None on my phone... DAZ, Wikipedia and Hivewire... And on my iPad, I cleared my data last night, and just visited DAZ while having coffee this morning.
AdRoll is in my Ghostery list of blocked trackers for this page, so it's extremely unlikely it's not from here.
Indeed - Ghostery shows 16 trackers on the DAZ site and forums
AdRoll , AppNexus , Facebook Custom Audience ,Google AdWords Conversion ,Google Analytics ,Google Dynamic Remarketing ,mediaFORGE ,MediaMath ,New Relic ,Rocket Fuel ,SpotXchange,TapAd,Gravatar, Live Rail, PubMatic, Right Media , Rubicon
I have confirmed it is coming from here... And it's real sleezy too.
I have my iPad set to deny 3rd party cookies, but when the message shows up on my iPad, it is a tiny thin band at the bottom... Clicking on the forums loads AdRoll into your cookies... Another one of those cheesy traps...
I'm very, VERY disappointed to see this here... This is the way those cheesy "10 celebrities who aged terribly" type websites operate... I expected more from DAZ.
The really annoying thing is it won't let me opt out without looping back to the message... So there is no "opt out"
I have my FireFox privacy set to Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked.
That isn't always enough...
I've seen this in other forums... The problem lies in that someone in the office gets a offer to buy ad space, and is happy to sell it, but doesn't look close enough at the people buying the ad, as it is their job to sell the ad space. The group buying the ad space looks legit on the surface, but as noted, is "partnered" with someone else, who is "partnered" with sleazy companies.
The only real hope is that when the people in the forums spot and report these issues, the office people listen and take approperiate measures.
Yes I know of another with this issue on iPhone, fortunately so far my iPad seems to not trigger that pop up, maybe I have the cookie already though I have cleared them.
I'm using this:
http://www.maxa-tools.com/cookie.php?lang=en
I wouldn't be surprised if this is a shortcoming of Safari, but nonetheless, it is something I should not have to jump through loops to avoid and "Opt Out" should be "Opt Out"... Presenting this as a choice, but making it unusable is probably illegal and anyone who "partners" with chumps like these should be aware of these shenanigans and do something about it... I think I've really had it with these parasites trying to crawl up into my colon every way and opportunity they can... I think people need to know about this, and NEED to speak up about this and voice that it is not welcome...
Quite frankly it's like I just found out an old friend was trying to record my conversations or track my goings... It's NOT cool and not appropriate for these forums.
I'm not seeing anything here - could your ISP/upstream provider be injecting this into the html? This sort of nonsense is catching on.
I wouldn't know how to detect that... But it is ONLY occurring here... I have been testing all sites I visit and only thes forums give this result.
I'm not being rude or anything, but isn't that what blocking third party cookies does too... The message is basically not allowing me to opt out and the only other choice is give in or leave.
If I could opt out, I wouldn't care so much... But I'd still be leery.
i use hosts file on my pc to ad block. don't know how that would work for a phone,though.
the dragoncave senses that i'm ad-blocking. they show me a subscrption banner in all the terrains when i'm egg hunting.
MVPS HOSTS now includes entries for most major parasites, hijackers and unwanted Adware/Spyware programs!
for windows - http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
wish i could figure out how to do this for my samsung phone.
I use this on the Computers here
http://www.iobit.com/en/malware-fighter.php
As well as Adblock Plus.
And this on the Android mobile and Tablets.

I never see anything popping up so either I am lucky or something works![smiley smiley](http://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/regular_smile.png)
Check to see if your AD blocker is blocking "http://a.adroll.com/j/roundtrip.js", odds are it isn't.
We have reported this to DAZ so that it can be looked into.
Thank you Richard, I really appreciate that.
Hm, speaking of this, I had a weird redirect a couple of weeks ago on DAZ at about 2am. The odd thing was that it only happened once, and it happened on *mobile* as well. No symptoms whatsoever on desktop browsing whatsoever.
That, sadly, does very little. Do Not Track is an entirely voluntary protocol; if the server at the other end is not set to honor it, you can be tracked whether you want it or not. Most commercial sites don't honor it, either by choice or because they simply haven't upgraded their server software so that it can. And Microsoft now has DNT set to "off" as the default for Internet Explorer and Edge -- they had set it to "on" as the default, but apparently, enough money objected to make them change their minds.
Just got this popup when browsing this forum (first time ever I've got such a message from Malwarebytes actually, and so far my system has always been clean when I've scanned it (last time earlier today)):
I cleaned out my Cookies last night on my laptop and then I got that and another outbound block in malwarebytes when I came back into the forum afterwards. I'm using Firefox Nightly at home. And it has always scanned clean before. (Currently on at work and have no control over what I can install on this laptop). Think DAZ need to look at what they are connecting to behind the scenes urgently.
And then give us a Dark Theme option for this Forum!
Firefox, AdblockPlus and NoScript. When clicking on the icon for NoScript I can see which scripts are blocked - and yes, Adroll.com is one of the blocked ones.
The only ones I am accepting is daz3d.com and ajax.googleapis.com. I have to accept those two to make the site work.
The rest? Only if you want to see the galleries (which is why I am not using the galleries nowadays - tooooo many scripts I don't like).
Mobiles are seriously insecure.
And I find Firefox to be more secure than Chrome.
I usually have 10 to 20 tabs open and my system is fine, no lag.
Same here.
Looking at the page source - this is at the very bottom:
<script type="text/javascript">

var host = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://s.adroll.com" : "http://a.adroll.com");
scr.setAttribute('async', 'true');
scr.type = "text/javascript";
scr.src = host + "/j/roundtrip.js";
((document.getElementsByTagName('head') || [null])[0] ||
document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0].parentNode).appendChild(scr);
if(oldonload){oldonload()}};
}());

</html>
Note the rfihub web bug at the end as well. I'm apparently not seeing anything because I've got anything dot doublecclick dot anything black holed on my system.
I'm still getting these (same site) now and then when browsing the forums...
I use a fairly obscure browser (Pale Moon) and have every anti-tracking plug-in known to man installed to stop this malicious marketing crap. I also delete my account and get a new one using a different (throw away) address every time my IP address changes (every few months). Daz has been getting worse for some time now. I may have to resort to using the Tor browser if they keep ramping it up.
