Total newbie - A warrior with an armor made of little stones
Hi all! I am a total newbie, so excuse-me if my question seems stupid.
I would like to create an image (not a 3D animation) where a warrior would have an armor made of a great number of small stones, precisely tiger eye stones, like this : http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://cf.cdn1.zepo.in/upload/product_photos/base/0/3/24/original3.202799.2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://barishh.com/Resellers-Wholesale-Lots/Tiger-Eye-Wholesale-Prices-id-202799.html&h=1890&w=2490&tbnid=GMiBPfX_nnXzfM:&docid=39O54-crPJS8jM&ei=k6n9Ve2sOov4aofiiPgK&tbm=isch&ved=0CD4QMygaMBpqFQoTCK3Ct6bdg8gCFQu8GgodBzECrw
The general look would be more a super hero than a warrior wiith armor. Bit I have no idea how to do that. So, my questions are:
- Can I use Daz3D for that?
- Which additional resources I would need?
- Is that a difficult task?
Thanks for your help

theres a couple of outfits in the store,

Thanks or your answer, MistyMist! So, it seems it is possible to do what I want with Daz3D!
Now, I would have to make an outfit like the one I want?
Not quite stones but

and there is

Well, I wrote a short story (it is on Amazon, but only in French, sorry; not good enough to write in English). In this story, the armors are in stones, tiger eye stone, I guess I'll not find outfits in the store.
Only other way I can think of easily in DAZ studio would be to use a stone shader with displacement on a bodysuit or skin.
i know plenty of ways to do what you want in other software the nearest thing would be using LAMH the look at my hair plugin and using stone props instead of hair curves as geometry.
A cobblestone height map plugged into Geo Shell displacement would be a good start, then try to create the look of the gems.
Hmm.
I think it's doable, it just takes a bit of work.
Thanks for your answer, JaguarElla. I googled stone shader, I see what it is. I suppose I would to do it. Is that complex? Apply it on skin seems good to me.
Now, remembe I am a newbien, I do not know what is LAMH or how to look at your plugin.
Thanks for your answer, Timmins! To create the look of the stone will be hard, I am afraid. Is there a possibility to use photos of the stones?
You could get pictures of stones for coloring. If you render in 3DL, and the shot wasn't very close up, that might be sufficient (maybe tiled a bit).
In Iray (which is more photorealistic very generally speaking), getting a good accurate bumpy surface is key. I'll experiment...
Well, I am a little lost with your explanations, Will. Remeber I am a newbie. Here what I guess, telle me if I am wrong.
A cobblestone height map is a kind of stone shader that I could place on skin? Geo Shell displacement is, as JaguarElla said, a "displacement" when I put the shader on the skin?
There is a channel called 'displacement.' It reads in a grayscale image and, based on the brightness of each pixel, transforms that to 'displace' the surface of an object by that amount.
So if you had a fuzzy disk image and put it into Displacement for a flat surface, I'll end up with a flat surface that's 'pushed out' like the disk showed.
If you want a lot of bumps on a surface, you can get an image of a bunch of bumps and voila.
To sum up: Pretty sure you can do this, but you're going to have to learn a bit about how things work.
Ok, WIll, thanks for your help!
I am busy today but will look later if I can whip you up a stone suit using Carrara surface replicator as real instances and run the exported obj through the transfer utility
I may be able to use Ultimate Unwrap 3D polyreduce and decimator to make it feasable to do
sadly I am having issues as genesis legs are too close and trying to assign surfaces to facegroups on my mesh with the geometry editor crashes DAZ studio
I may need to take it back into carrara and do it there, using weightbrush with all those bulge etc maps on my stretched stones a nightmare
not sure if I can do this at all sadly
JaguarElla, thanks a lot for your work! But I do not want that you spend your time on that, I think it would be a lot of work to do that I need. Now, I saw your Yourtube channel, I am impressed with your work! When I see your warrior (image below), I think that the armor he has on his arms would do the job; with eye tiger stones instead of metal. Is that difficult?
that is the Genesis supersuit that comes with some really great shaders, possibly some you could use
http://www.daz3d.com/supersuit-pro-bundle
for shaders search through these depending on if you are using iray or 3Delight you may need to work out which are suited
most are 3Delight, iray is only recent and say if are for it
http://www.daz3d.com/daz-studio-shaders
I am getting there actually, I hid sections with geometry editor and slowly filled weights and got it much better
sadly I am no premier artist so very amature I will upload it soon, no restrictions on usage
Thanks for all your help, Jaguar!

OK here it is, for genesis, has some stretching so animated a bit odd but in static poses maybe OK,
I do not know how to do metadata so you need to look under people genesis clothing in your content library
You did, at least in my opinion, an impressive job, Jaguar.
