Artist Spotlight Series: Jeff Salvage

This week, we are featuring Jeff Salvage, a trailblazer in combining art, humor, and advocacy through 3D animation and storytelling. By harnessing the power of Daz Studio and assets from the Daz 3D Marketplace, he has created a series of imaginative and engaging projects to raise awareness about race walking. Through his work, Salvage highlights the physical and mental benefits of race walking while collaborating with the United States Race Walking Foundation. Let’s dive into some of his standout projects that blend creativity, technology, and fitness.

Walk Wars: Rise of the Race Walkers

One of Salvage’s most ambitious projects is Walk Wars: Rise of the Race Walkers, a Star Wars-inspired parody that combines his passions for race walking, Star Wars, and computers. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, this animated short features iconic characters such as Leia, Luke, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, General Grievous, and Jabba the Hutt, reimagined within the world of race walking.

The Plot:

Set in a galaxy far, far away, Rebel warriors and the Galactic Empire agree to settle their conflict through an ancient footrace competition known as the Galactic Race Walking Championships. Following the venerable rules of pedestrianism—one foot in contact with the ground at all times and a straightened leg upon contact—representatives race to determine control of the galaxy.

With dynamic animations, voice work from friends and even Olympian race walkers, plus assets sourced from Daz Studio and other 3D marketplaces, Walk Wars is an entertaining and unique way to showcase the art of race walking while giving a nod to a beloved sci-fi franchise.

Holiday-Themed Race Walking Trailers

Salvage’s creativity extends to short holiday-themed trailers aimed at promoting health and fitness in a lighthearted way. These trailers, created with Daz Studio, bring race walking into Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas celebrations.

Imagine race walkers replacing Santa’s reindeer or characters striding through spooky Halloween scenes. These short animations, with their clever quips and engaging visuals, are perfect examples of what can be achieved with Daz Studio’s tools and dynamic voiceovers. They are short, sweet, and deliver their message effectively: fitness can be festive and fun.

A Sneak Peek: Medieval Origins of Race Walking

One of Jeff’s upcoming projects takes us back in time with The Medieval Origins of Race Walking—a fairy tale he wrote over 25 years ago. The story imagines race walking’s beginnings as a pub crawl contest in medieval times. This project, made almost entirely with Daz Store assets, is rich in detail, featuring medieval-inspired props, environments, and even VDB models for fire and smoke effects, adding a cinematic touch to the animation.

Book Companion:

Jeff has published a captivating graphic novel book that recounts this tale of young Oswald, the first race walker, and his adventures in medieval times. The book is a mix of whimsical storytelling and stunning Daz renders, making it an ideal gift for race walking enthusiasts. It even includes bonus content with outtakes and musings on the sport. The Bigger Picture

Jeff Salvage’s projects showcase how Daz Studio can be used not only for creating animations but also for telling stories, publishing illustrated books, and advocating for a healthier lifestyle. His work demonstrates the versatility of Daz assets, from creating dynamic animations to building immersive medieval worlds.
