What are your ideal Iray render settings for dark scenes, to minimise the 'fireflies' effect?

Light it up so it isn't dark, and then use Tone Mapping to make it "dark" again.
Iray wants more "actual photons" (well, simulations of photons) bouncing around, or it has to make guesses and as you see it can guess pretty badly with no info.
Interesting technique! Is there a particular formula to apply in Tone Mapping for creating a low-lit effect? I'm primarily needing this for dark interiors.
Probably the easiest is to just increase Exposure Value under Tone Mapping until it meets the look you're going for. How much you increase it by will depend on how much light there is in the scene and how dark you want it to appear.
I render it with the directions of light correct and bright, then make it dark in photoshop.
...essentially like the old Hollywood trick of filming night scenes in daylight with dark filters
Use a 3d sphere and add Iray purple glow in dark shader. In Daz studio you can create a 3D primitive use this sphere with Iray glow shader and make it the source of light for the scene. the larger the sphere the more light.
