It has 40 pages. The first 5 pages are table of contents and introduction.
I don't normally comment on products to strongly recommend them, but I felt compelled to do so for this tutorial. I had an early look at the tutorial as Khory was preparing it, then again just before she submitted it to DAZ.
The amount of information in this tutorial goes beyond the scope of AoA's Subsurface shader. Khory breaks down each setting in the surfaces tab, explains what the setting is used for, how they interact with other settings in the surface panel, and in some case she even explains how your lighting will affect that setting or vice versa. She gives options and alternatives for settings, like using a color map or using a diffuse color, specularity vs specular 2, etc, how to combat the "orange glow" that so many users encounter, and more.
If you are looking to add some realism in your character renders, or how to avoid certain problem areas (such as blowout on specularity), then you will, without a doubt, learn something from this well organized, plain language tutorial. Some people learn from videos, others from reading, others from just "figuring it out". Well, there is no video with this tutorial, but the other two learners will benefit from going through this document. Even advanced users will learn some things they didn't know.
Khory doesn't know I'm writing this, so I'm warily checking my PM's and my inbox for her reaction, but I just thought it had to be said. She worked very hard on this and I couldn't find any bases that she didn't cover.
I highly recommend it. :)
The tips Khory shares in the tutorial will certainly be useful for third party figures as well as DAZ figures because she made the effort to explain the settings, rather than just say "do this to the diffuse channel to make this work." So, if your character has blue skin, like a N'avi, then you will know how to make those features pop, rather than just how to make everyday white girl skin look good. I honestly think anyone who wants to understand the surface tab should take a look at this tutorial.
Nursoda's critters (as you call them) are really fun and I have bought a few of them myself over the years. I haven't tried using this shader on them, but what a wonderful idea! They will look even better, IMO. I think you just gave me something to play around with, lol.
I hope the 'critters' didn't sound negative in any way, I love those original and very unique figures and have most of them. Most even look great in DS out of the box. Wasn't my intention if there was a negative vibe, same is for the tutorial. I'll definitely get that one this evening when at home and that's probably part of your very helpful comments too ^^
Btw. thanks for making more UV sets available for G2F, I like things that add more options to the huge collection of content I already have, so I probably get your new UV bundle too.
No! Not at all. I could tell it was said with affection, and since I don't even know Nursoda, it wouldn't affect me anyway. As for the UV bundle, thanks for saying thanks :)
I've recently been reading up on the subsurface shader and experimenting with more realistic character renders using Daz Studio, particular after using both Luxus and Reality plugins and getting some decent results. Finally I decided it was finally time to really understand what the built-in Daz Studio render engine could do. While I have found the base shader documentation good, this tutorial has save me a lot of needless experimental time and allowed me to focus on the results I want to achieve. I've even started to improve on the renders using the Olympia figure, which I thought was great to begin with.
Highly recommended.
bought it! It's a very good tuto.
Well, Slosh, from my POV, you should get a commission. ;) I was ready to pass it by based on the title. I normally consider myself above "intro" level for these sorts of things. But it sounds like maybe Khory was selling herself short in that regard.
::hmph:: I was debating about this tutorial, now you just had to make it more of a "must buy". I guess I must try to rearrange my pennies and squeeze them harder. See if more will appear.
LOL, JonnyRay. I think you might be right about the title. I'm guessing Khory just meant to convey that you wouldn't be jumping straight into advanced mumbo jumbo, but would actually be walked through from the beginning.
Ok so maybe I did goof with the name a little..But it is hard to gauge what people with experience will and will not know. I would rather ere on the side of caution than have people vexed that there was not enough information that they did not already know. One of the tricky bits about a tutorial like this is trying to sort out things that I think everyone should already know from what everyone really does already know.

I already knew you were going to say that. ;-) Hmm, food or hobby... since I could stand to lose a few pounds, hobby may win out.
