Which model to buy first?

Good morning,

My name is Alex. I am working on some illustration that required 3d elements and I came across Daz 3d. I really like this program, and the modular aspect of it. And I have gotten some good results on my very first render.

Im have seen some really cool models, but I am not sure which plug-ins I need to buy to get the look I want.

I could really use these add-ons.

But where do I start? What do I need first?

Move to The Commons because it is not an offer of a freebie

It depends on what you want to do, precisely. Do you have anything specific in mind?
The morph bundle gives you the tools to dial your own characters.
Lillith is a "completed" morph set with its own skin for Genesis 2.

Basically, if you want only the Lillith 6 look, then buy her, and the HD is an add on for more definition to her.
If you want to experiment, then I recommend the morph set, as you can spin the dials and make G2F look how ever you want.

Thanks for your reply Lee, I actually am working on some medical illustrations.

They need to be fairly simple in terms of skin texture, but it would be nice to have the HD bump map/displacement map.

And it would be really awesome to be able to "spin the dials."

But I am not sure. Do I have the genesis 2 base? Is that the model that comes with daz?

Just for your information, the program is called DAZ Studio, or simply Studio or DS, DAZ 3D is the name of the company, and they make other software like Carrara, Bryce and Hexagon. It may prevent any confusion when posting.

Both Genesis (original) and Genesis 2 Male and Genesis 2 Female come free with DAZ Studio, but you have to download and install them, they are not part of the program install. There are other bundles as well, like Lights and Shaders which may also be useful that you can download from the same place.

Yes, you have the Genesis 2 Female / Male Starter pack that comes with DAZ Studio. They are coming in a seperate installation package, so you will have to download them, if you haven't already done that. :-)

    http://www.daz3d.com/growing-up-for-genesis2-female-s-v6
    http://www.daz3d.com/shape-shift-for-genesis2-female-base-and-v6

I can recommend these on in addition to the G2F morph bundle (http://www.daz3d.com/zev0 has lots of useful morphs, but if you are starting out, it's best not to overdo it. :-)).

    For starter figures
    http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-6
    http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-6-hd-add-on
is usually a good start. A lot of figures are based on V6, and the HD add on for her looks really great.

There are a lot of "pre-dialed" sets, like http://www.daz3d.com/people-of-earth-faces-of-africa-genesis-2-female-s that give you easy access to various shapes, but they are all based on the G2F morph bundle... so, you could reach a similar result with a bit of work.

One word of caution - neither G2F nor the G2male counterpart have gens. If you want to render anatomically correct people in the nude, you will have to resort to either buying a Pro bundle (like, V6 Pro), or resort to freebies or third party gens from other sites.

    Alex,

Genesis 2 Female and Male both come free with DAZ Studio 4.6 Pro which is also free - http://www.daz3d.com/get_studio (click on the link under "Already a member?" to just login since you are already a memeber.

The Genesis 2 Female morph bundle would be the least you need if you want some variation in your characters though It is nice to have a few character shapes too. The way the Genesis technology works is that ALL the figure morphs you have can be mixed together to create a new look for your characters in your images and animations.

Thanks I will download some of the links this evening and see were I stand after playing with those.

I am not so concerned with the "gen." Although I am doing medical illustrations, the target audience is all age so the more modest the better.

thanks for all the kind responses! cheers.

    STOP ;)

if you really plan to spend that much money on your first purchases, think about joining Platinum Club before that:.
    http://www.daz3d.com/platinum-club-plus

Scroll down the page, at the bottom there are the two options for quarterly or annual subscription. Recently it's PC anniversary so both options are on sale with 30% off from what you see there (only few more days) !

Just to show you an example with the three items from your first post: PC membership would save you 40% on these DAZ Originals (that is listed under 'Artist'), so those would cost you less than $68 instead of regular $112.85. You see that alone easily saves you lot more than the costs for a membership, which on sale would be $16.80 for quarterly or $49 for annual.

Usually you get a 30% discount on Daz Originals that stack with other discounts, two different $6 coupons each month, special prices on new PC items each week, 1000+ $1.99 items to choose from in the PC+ category and some more discounts from time to time. For few more days it is even 40% discount on DO items during ongoing celebrations, but will end soon.

    Maybe that helps ^^

I don't think Lilith would be an ideal choice for base shape for medical illustration as she's very much an idealised or extreme shape. Stephanie 6 and Victoria 6 would be more normal shapes, with S6 probably the best. But you could also get a good normal base with the body morphs.

    STOP ALL :).

Firstly, the medical pictures you want to make - do you need internal organs? Because if it's so, then Generation 4 figures have you covered with newer generations (Genesis - Generation 5 - and Gen2F/Gen2M - Generation 6; all base figures are included for free with DS): http://www.daz3d.com/3d/3d-medical-art/. The biggest pack is this one: http://www.daz3d.com/anatomy-4-pro-bundle.

Secondly, if you don't need to explore the inside, then I'd suggest trying to get as much for as little as you can. Genesis supports both genders with many, many morphs, the crucial ones are from Evolution series (they are included here: http://www.daz3d.com/shop/genesis-evolution-morph-bundle/, here: http://www.daz3d.com/genesis-starter-bundle or as separate products, but unless one of the items goes on sale - for example when it's put on Fast Grab: http://www.daz3d.com/fast-grab-3d-models, thus discounted by 70% - then the second bundle is a better choice).

Gen2F and Gen2M are gender-split and sometimes support HD options. If you can afford it and really need it (plus your computer can handle it), then it's an eye-candy. They require separate morph packs unlike Genesis, so keep that in mind.

And DAZ as well as other sites like ShareCG, Renderosity and RuntimeDNA may offer freebies too. The beloved interactive lessons combine three things: bundles of useful content, tutorials and being free, so grab them instantly: http://www.daz3d.com/interactive-lessons. We have two categories for freebies: https://www.daz3d.com/freebies (they change weekly, circa about) and http://www.daz3d.com/free-3d-models-and-content where you either need to be a PC+ member (you get them for free then) or have a paid product in your cart. There can also be other freebies found (like the following: http://www.daz3d.com/cheyenne-accessories, http://www.daz3d.com/printers), but you need to search for them, for instance sorting by price. Remember to grab free items when you spot them, even if you think you'll never have use for them, because you don't have to download them (they can be left in your library and downloaded any time and as often as you want) and they vanish quickly.

PC+ programme is a good thing if you can afford a bigger one-time purchase, because you get discounts on DAZ Originals, some additional offers and so on. If you want to join it, do it now, because there's the annual PC+ sale going on, when there are additional packs with huge discounts. They are very handy for newcomers; this one is free for PC+ members: http://www.daz3d.com/platinum-club-mega-pack.

Don't forget to frequent the site during big holidays like Christmas or Easter, because there are additional steals available then (like the annual so-called "Christmas PAs" event when our beloved PAs can give us presents ). Subscribing to this thread for limited-time freebies is a good idea as well: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/16978/.

Lilith is a major shape for Gen2F. Think of her as of a doll: there's the morph you get with a texture. Some morphs the PAs make require a major shape, because they have the recipe that makes DS ask for it. Victoria and Michael are the most popular major shapes and have their iterations in all generations. All major shapes are addons for V4, M4, Genesis, Gen2F and Gen2M. A plugin that converts morphs from one another is called GenX2 and it's a real deal.

I'd also recommend waiting until a sale before you buy most of the bundles - unless you desperately need it. Daz has regular and sometimes very deep sales. The DO sales are improved if you are a member of the PC+ . Recently V6 pro bundle was in fastgrab at 70% off.

As Anicad advises, if you have no deadlines, patience is a good thing. DAZ has sales all the time, but the trick is to choose a correct one for what you need. Genesis Evolution Bundle is known to show up on Fast Grab quite regularly, so waiting is bound to pay off - if you can afford the time, of course.

Meanwhile, I can recommend downloading 182 DieTrying's Morphs: for Genesis as well as Gen2F and Gen2M (converted by our very own SickleYield). They are free all the time, just search for them in Google, Bing or any other search engine. For awesome free everyday clothes, head to Wilmap.
