Short Cropped Hair

Does anyone know of a hair product for Genesis (not G2M) that is cropped short - possibly half an inch or shorter?

I've tried with Garibaldi but the damn thing crashes my DAZ Studio 4.7 so regularly that I want to scream.

With so many men wearing their hair very short these days, I find it a big surprise that there isn't a product in store. I guess it would have to be fibermesh or something similar, however.

Thanks. I had seen that and I really want something that is the same length all over ... about the same as the back and sides of that hair.

Surprised you could post a link to the R store - I thought the admins here had banned that :)

Anyhow, the issue is the same with that hair - it isn't really short. I'm looking for something that's almost stubble. Shorter than a the length of a fingernail. I found a freebie by Soto but it doesn't seem to work for me - can't get it to fit my Genesis men. I don't have G2M.

Load the hair without selecting Genesis.
Then move the hair into the proper position and use scaling (and whatever morphs built into the hair) to make it fit to Genesis.
When all is done, select "Parent to" and parent it to Genesis' head.
That way, you usually can use amy hair on any character.

Maybe you could use just the skullcap of an existing hair product you own and apply a shader like the grass shader or try just a displacement map.

Here's one (Gen4 and earlier) that's pretty even...

That's an interesting option. How do I separate the skull cap from the hair? I don't think I have those grass shaders - are they freebies?

Some of the Genesis/M5 skins have a shaded scalp which would be fine if it had displacement but, in my renders, the head had a razor sharp outline which is not very realistic.

Again, far too long, as is the hair in your second link. Sorry :)

Yes, I'm aware of how to do it and do so with many other Gen4 hair items on Genesis but, for some reason, I have problems with the Soto freebie.

Mikey was doing a "high and tight" style, but haven't seen any recent progress on it. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/51739/

That, without the punk top, would be very close. Ideally with the option to "grow" the stubble slightly.

    Like he did here:

Hmm. wish the short hair wasn't all fiber mesh. It still look so much like grass to me.

Have you tried the hair that comes with Oliver?

I don't use G4M. I really can't afford to keep up with all the wardrobes, characters, hair, etc. for G2F, let alone her male counterpart. So I decided to carry on using Genesis One (and, occasionally, M4) for my males. The females tend to be the focus of my renders anyway. I don't have much of a wardrobe for Genesis One males either - just the essentials (jeans, shorts, T-Shirts, etc.).

Laticis has a free add-on for the Real Short Hair product (https://www.daz3d.com/real-short-hair-for-genesis-2-male-s), but it is for genesis 2 and would need a little tweaking to fit Genesis.
    This is the add-on

Cesar for M4 comes with short cropped hair http://www.daz3d.com/cesar-character-set-for-m4

There's also Sav's Alpha Scalp at Renderosity, which has a genesis fit and has a non-patterned option for the scalp hair http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/sav-alpha-scalp/99012/

The Laticis freebie is just right. Pity it requires the G2M hair product first. Would be fine for me if it were standalone and had a Genesis One fit.

3Dream has a freebie called Boy Hair http://www.arrow3d.com/ It's for V4 but autofits pretty nicely to Genesis male.

I've seen that before but didn't consider it because I don't like the look of the hair (It isn't what I'm looking for). However, the skullcap might be useful is I could figure out how to get some form of shader or displacement to simulate short stubble-like hair.

No - that's very similar to the Rendo product, above.

Laticus made a free add-on to that product that produces very short almost stubble like hair. The freebie add-on for his Real Short Hair is available over at DeviantArt

A few products have separate geometry for the skullcap, like Stalker Girl Hair and Beautiful Black Hairstyle. But for those that don't, you can select all the other surfaces in the Surfaces pane and set their opacity to 0 so only the skullcap is rendered. The grass shaders that i was thinking of are sold in the DAZ store.

Well, these sounded like good ideas when I proposed them, but my attempts to implement them were not very convincing. I just used Photoshop to create a uniform noise pattern for the displacement. A better displacement map might yield a better result - or might not.

These were rendered with 3Delight using the skullcap from Timeless Male Hair for Genesis. Sorry they are pretty pitiful. :P

How about using the Look at my hair option? The player is free. This is the Afro short hair (longer version) http://www.furrythings.com/presets-humanoids/ (settings:human hair shader; young blond; midnight black colour)
and a modification to shorten it (requires the paid version but the developer might allow to share the preset)

I had no idea what the "player" was until I checked after your post. I'll give that a go tomorrow.

Ah, I see ... just allows presets, no trimming. LAMH is not something I would buy - I already have Garibaldi and am far from impressed with that. Once bitten, twice shy.

If you have a G2M clone for Genesis (this is trivial to create if you have gen x), then transferring a G2M hair to Genesis would be very easy and should work fine. I have done many hairs in the other direction (ie Genesis to G2M) and they look identical on G2M as they do on Genesis.

I do not have the real short hair for G2M, but I do have Andrew Flip Hair for G2M which is also Fibre Mesh. Below I fitted the G2M hair onto Genesis and then morphed Genesis using Freak 5. I picked F5 to show that even with a fairly extreme morph an auto fitted hair for another figure should fit just fine.

Whilst I can understand some peoples reluctance to use items created for another figure on their figure of choice, that should not really be the case for hair, which can fairly easily be fitted to any figure.

There's actually quite a bit of stuff that is more or less 'figure neutral'...

Thanks for reminding me! I have "Genesis Generation X2" and "GenX2 AddOn for Genesis 2" but these are included in those purchases that seemed a good idea at the time but have remained largely unused. I'll now need to remind myself how to use them.

Having said that, I don't use Genesis One for females and I don't use G2M for males because I have no content for G2M. So it is not really surprising that I have not used the GenX product much.
