volume swirling smoke, dust devil, magic effect

What do we have in the way of magical effects (or items that could be hacked into one) similar to a dust devil or swirling cloud of smoke in tendrils around or concentrated on the perimiter of a circle, free or paid?  I know that's a bit vague, I can't find a good picture or example.  Specifically ones that are volumetric (rather than 2D plane image based, so that smoke shaders could be used instead of images; I'm thinking Bryce for a scene with not much memory left).
