picking iray or 3delight for renders

okay i'm behind the curve and forgive me if this has been answered i can't find it.

In order to choose between Iray and 3delight in rendering it's an option in the render settings correct?

If i'm using 3delight shaders and mats it's best to use the 3delight settings, and if using iray mats it's best to render with the iray settings?

Am i understanding this correctly? 

I do get the need to change shaders and mats and lighting and all that, just haven't figured out the settings for rendering.

You understand correctly.

In the Render Settings pane, change the "Engine" dropdown to 3Delight or "NVIDIA Iray", then use the shaders/materials appropriate for whichever you chose when available.
