is there only the soft shadow option or is there a setting to get actual area shadows?
Greetings can you explain exactly what an area shadow is?
is this what you mean?

Carrara has only ray traced or shadow buffer
(or you can buy the Octane plugin for PBR lighting or other options)
maybe this thread is helpful as shadows really depend on the lighting used

in the Autodesk help file, yes
I only have an option for blured shadows in Carrara. It's a start. Not perfect, but will do. Sort of.
Hi,
Have you tried using a light array?
In Carrara, use "Replicator" to create an array (grid, box etc) of point lights.
Or,
In example pic, I used a "Surface replicator" to create array of point lights on plane.

Sure, Attached.
Forum does not allow .car files, so have had to zip the file.

interesting
I tried anther approach with Shapelight and IES profile. That seems to do the area shadows but with another problem
the IES light doesn't show up correctly in reflections
I will try to fake a shape of, say a neon tube and apply the IES profile
with Shapelight there seems to be only Ring and square (?) or maybe there is a setting hidden that I haven't found yet
All in all an interesting subject +
