Blue Planet Orbital View Problems

No matter what I do all renders I perform using this set turn out completely black.

I can start off with characters that are well lit, render well, and add the background; boom,  completely black.  I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.  I've tried to render in Iray, 3Dlight,  and Reality with the same end result in all of them.

Have you tried doing it the other way round — add the background to an empty scene, then add your character and lights? It is possible to have D|S set up so that adding a scene or scene subset with its own light setup will throw out any already existing lights. This can easily leave you with lights that don't work anything like what you expect.

Also, don't forget that Blue Planet has a solid background shape with the stars texture applied to it. This will only work if it's set so that your lights can shine through it — and this is impossible in Iray because Iray materials can't do that.

Tried the background alone with 3Delight and can now render the backdrop.  That's a start.
