Uber Shader - Is it possible to use volume with translucency?

Playing with volume and scattering - is it possible to have volume along with transparency? It doesn't seem so.
Try it with cutout opacity, and it just gets weird, mostly uniform translucent despite a map being there. With Translucency, plugging a map into it doesn't seem to make any difference.
In other words, trying to achieve some bits clear, no matter the thickness and some bits with color, the amount of color depending upon the thickness.

"Translucency" is usually achieved, I think, with the Scatter and Transmit settings.
Bummer - there are no options to add a map there. What I was hoping for was a non-uniform color transmission with it.
