3x 980Ti's vs 2x Titan X's ?

I'm speccing up a heavyweight system for Daz Studio and have a question regarding graphics cards.  I originally posted this as part of a thread in new users but it's probably mor of a 'nuts and bolts' question.

What would be better

3x 980Ti's vs 2x Titan-X's ?

From what I understand Daz Studio works on the number of available cores on the graphics cards?  As the Titan X has only slightly more cores per card than the 980Ti - would I be right in assuming that 3x 980ti's should render significantly faster than 2x Titan-X's?

Just curious if anyone has tried three and if it's worth the extra money?  The 12GB of the Titan is definitely a nice to have but realistically I'm not going to have no more than 4x G3 characters and a basic set in one render so expect the 6Gb of the 980 to handle it.

If you are talking about the new Pascal based Titan X, remember that Iray isn't supported yet for the Pascal cards.
  • I was on about the older Titan X - no point in dropping in a bunch of expensive cards if the system is going to have to sit on the shelf waiting for an indefinite about of time for a patch to make it work. (Which is why im looking at he 980Ti and not the 10 series cards.

The 3 980ti will likely be faster.

But if a scene is over 6GB, then they are only as fast as your CPU, or you start messing about to get it rendered on the cards

... So how important is that extra 6GB to you. I've had a couple of scenes recently over the 6GB of my 980, and so considering a Titan; but no longer available as a standalone product.

  • Valid point - would it be possible to link a Titan as the 1st card and two 980s as the 2nd and 3rd or do they all have to be matched cards.

Your cards don't have to be matched. I use a 770(4gb) and a 460 (1gb). If a scene is too big for the 460, then it just gets ignored and the 770 still works. On smaller scenes, the two cards work together fine.

  • OK, that's definitely worth knowing - I think I will probably go with 2x 6Gb 980's and that will leave a slot available, so if I find that I break through the 6Gb limit I can move the 980s and slide a Titan into slot 1.  That will save some cash and leave options open for future expansion, if I find I'm consistantly inder the limit I can stick and extra 980 in at a later date

You won't have to move cards. Studio and Iray don't care where the cards are physically located. You just need to specificy which cards to use.
