Is "Remove From All Categories" bugged?
In trying to recategorize my content, it would save a lot of time to clear all of an item's existing categories at one. And that's supposed to be possible.
Depending on your version, you get to this feature through Content Library > right click an item > Categorize, then:
- Official Build 4.9.2.70: check the "Remove from All Categories" checkbox
- Public Beta Build 4.9.3.56: click the "Remove From All Categories" button
I've tried this in various ways. Whenever I go back in to Categorize, the old categories are still there.
In the 4.9.3.16 changelog it says that in versions with a checkbox, you have to check the box, accept the dialog, and then come back in. Tried that. Nope.
Then it says that in the 4.9.3 beta builds the checkbox has been replaced with a button and you don't have to exit and re-enter the dialog. Great! When I clicked the button I was excited to see all the categories get cleared. But upon accepting and going back in... nope. All the categories are back.
I doubt this matters, but I'm using custom content library locations instead of the default ones in C:\Users.
Comments
Categorizing via the Content Library pane causes all categorizations to be shown; even hidden vendor categorizations.
Thanks, that's good to know. I'm not sure I follow though. Is your comment related to the problem I'm seeing -- does it explain the problem or give me a way to fix it?
When you "remove" a vendor categorisation (one that was created by the metadata, generally) then it is not in fact removed but hidden - in the Content Library listing those hidden categorisations still show, so you see the removed items.
Thanks Richard, I think I get it now.
So is Remove "From All Categories" really intended mostly for Smart Content, and less for the Content Library?
I ask becasue it sounds like clicking that button...
In other words, it seems that in Content Library, "Remove from All Categories" really means "Remove From Some Categories". And assuming I understand that right, I guess there's not a button that will do what I'm hoping for -- remove all categories.
Launching from the Content Library the Remove from All Categories command is a reset function - it's removing the changes you have made, restoring the default categorisation. When you launch from Smart Content (or any of the CMS views in other panes, such as the presets tabs in various parametrs panes) it really does remove/hide all categories - both yours and the defaults - and the item is dumped into Lost and Found. As i understand it this is because the Content Library is a manager for the categorisation, but the other panes are users of the categorisation.
Thank you for clarifying. It makes sense to me now.
Richard, this simply does not work for me in 4.9.3.56. I have been trying for weeks, and in several versions of DS, to get FWSA Edgar HD for Michael 7 out of his own subcategory. He belongs in the parent category, Real World. I located the figure in Smart Content, right clicked on the icon, selected categorize, and clicked Remove From All Categories. The category dialog unchecks all the previously checked category. It looks good. But when I click Accept, the categories are NOT removed. If I right click on the asset again and select categorize, it shows that category checked again. Show Hidden Vendor Categorizations is unchecked in my preferences. I simply cannot get this working. I submitted a help request a few weeks ago and was told at that time that the ability to remove vendor categorizations was not fully implemented (my interpretation of CS-speak). Am I doing something wrong, or is Michael Efram correct that it is "bugged"?
I see that. I can kill the category, after moving the file to the Real World category, by right-clicking on it in the Content Library Category view and selecting Delete. I don't know if this is a bug in categorisation, a bug in Edgar's metadata or something else.
Thank you for confirming the problem. Since I already wrote a help request about this once, which has not resulted in a fix, I'm not sure what I can do about it at this point. I guess I'll just hope they eventually fix whatever is wrong. Otherwise, I guess I'll have to manually delete the category, as you and one other poster also suggested.
