ASKING DAZ STUDIO USERS FOR SOME ASSISTANCE AND FEEDBACK

This questionnaire was approved by the moderators so that I as a Published Artist and my fellow Published Artists can better serve your needs when creating pose packages and also determining what figures you like to use preferrably within the Genesis range of figures here at Daz3D.  The form is from ProFotograf, and results will be shared with the Published Artists in order that we may really serve you well with more of what you like for the figures you like.  Thanks to Richard H. and Cris P. for allowing me to get your feedback.

Go to the form here:

Thanks to all of you Daz Studio & Genesis users in advance for your assistance!

Antonio Rodriguez
ProFotograf (Daz PA)

(20160818) PS: The form has been updated a few times thanks to constructive critique by several users' comments below.  The results I needed to get out of this the most in the end result was to know for Male or Female figures, which are the most popular being used, Genesis, Genesis 2, Genesis 3, and if users would rather buy a set of poses which are initially made for the Base Genesis figure types (ie: Genesis Base, Genesis 2 Base Figure, Genesis 3 Base Figure as a starting point - but some people told me to make them for the standard male/female figures in those series ie: V5, V6, V7, M5, M6, M7.  These figures start off sometimes with different heights and different body shapes than the base figures, so I wanted to find out which is really more popular or does it even matter?  So far the results are very interesting, and I'm seeing different things happening with the responses, solidifying what I believe to be the best solutions to make the customers at least the most happy with their pose packs in the end.

I would love to hear from those of you who want specific types of poses which have never been done for either male or female, and to be able to fill a really big missing gap in the world of poses, even if they be starter poses for particular purposes.  In advance, thanks to everyone who participated in this survey.

Also when you are finished with the survey, you have a new option to see "Previous Responses" which shows you where the survey is at that particular moment in time... With charts and graphs.

Your response format doesn't allow a responder to indicate that they use more than one generation of character.

Fixed that for the Genesis, Genesis 2 Female/Male, Genesis 3 Female/Male questions so you can answer more than one.  The only thing you cannot do is jump from Male to Female as the questionnaire is rigged for either Female/Male directionally to get some other information about usage.  You can fill out the form more than once, once for Female and once for Male if you like.

    Thanks for catching that,

You might have another bug (at least in the version I filled out). When I filled it out, I selected primarily female, but it still directed me fill out details for female and then for male. So, I filled out both.

Now I went back to look at the updated form. It has check boxes instead of radio buttons, so that is good. However, I said I used mostly female characers and it later vectored me to the page titled for male characters. I aborted at that point and didn't submit it, since I was just looking to see what had been changed. It looks like it still needs some tweaking.

Oh maybe I need to force it to go to a completion page... This is my first such Google Form page.

I think I got it right this time Barbult.... It's tricky when you don't know everything about how the forms work. ;-)

    Comments on the latest version:

Why does "Do you buy poses?" let me check both "Yes, I do" and "No, I don't" at the same time? This should be a radio button to allow either one or the other, but not both, I would think.

The introductory text on the form contains some grammatical errors. Perhaps you are not a native English speaker. I would suggest the following changes:
Line 1: customers should be customers' (possessive plural)
Line 3: make should be made

(I have spent years testing software and I do beta testing for some PAs in the Daz Store. It is second nature for me to home in on inconsistencies and errors. If I'm providing more feedback than you'd like to get here, just say so, and I'll go away. laughI won't be offended. I hope you are not offended by the feedback I've provided. The more accurate the form is, the more likely the responses will be meaningful.)

Well I filled it out but practically speaking 'Everyday Poses' means male & female poses.

I took the survey, but note that I don't primarily purchase only female or only male poses, I need both equally (but that's not an option, had to pick one at random, so keep in mind your results on that data point might be a bit off from reality.)  I selected the option for everyday poses, but perhaps I should have selected "other" and filled in a reason.

I have a zillion standing, sitting, pinup, etc. as those seem to be included in many of the packages.  However in comparison I have far fewer specialized poses, like people actually doing things.  There certainly are a bunch of useful ones (I can't remember them offhand, although I know there are a variety of specialized poses I got), but they are far fewer in number than the others.  But if I want a specific generation of character to pick something up or use some normal object, I'm probably limited to just a handful of poses when I get to that specific point.  I don't know if this is a new market, or an indication of poor sales in that market though, or just me not looking in the right place for those poses in the store.

I think "Do you use the Base Figure or Characters to Start?" should use checkboxes. Or at least have an Other, where I can mention how I use the figures and characters. (Sometimes I start with the base Genesis 2/3 figure, sometimes I start with a named figure or character. Sometimes I dial in morphs to change the looke of the character, etc.)

Also, my answers are the same whether I'm using male or female models: I do buy poses, (they make a great starting point;) I prefer buying realistic everyday poses; I use Genesis 2 and Genesis 3 roughly the same percentage, I use Genesis but not nearly as often as the later generations; More often than not, I do not start with the base figure, or Michael/Victoria, but I do from time to time. I usually load the figure I'm planning on using, then tweak the morphs to get the look I'm going for. With the ladies, that often means dialing down the size of the breasts.

Oh yeah, also pleasepleaseplease don't include translations in the poses (unless the poses are supposed to position the characters in a set, even then a second unpositioned pose would be supremely helpful for when you aren't using the set).  Someday I'm going to have to sit down and manually load, frame, resave, recategorize the old to trash and recategorize the new pose to where the old one was for probably hundreds, possibly over a thousand individual poses.  That is an insane chore I'm not looking forward too, but will be a big work block until I sit down and spend the weeks it will take to correct, because half the time I try a pose to see if it looks good my character jumps out of view, and suddenly instead of creating art I'm messing around with just trying to see what the heck the pose even is.  aaaaaaarg.  Did I mention please?  Thanks!

I filled out the form but in truth I would prefer you to continue to make male characters instead of poses because there are so few PAs who focus on male characters.

I looked at it bu did not submit it - to restrictive.

I use both male and female, roughly equal time for each, Genesis 2 and Genesis 3.

I'm interested in everyday activity poses. Grocery shopping, putting away the groceries, food prep, mopping/vacuuming the floor, painting (walls, doors, whatever - brush and/or roller), jacking up the car, changing a tire, chopping down a tree/splitting firewood, building a campfire, doing dishes (old school hands in soapy water, new school loading/unloading dishwasher).

Note that none of these should be gender-specific - a post-apocoliptic hermit still needs to clean the cabin and do dishes.

Take a leaf from Ironman13's playbook and include some of the props - saucepan with lid and wooden spoon, for example, for stirring the sauce/soup/stew; ax or hatchet for chopping wood; vacuum cleaner, mop and bucket. We provide the tree, floor, stove, whatever.

Hi, filled out the document, want to add a few extra considerations not in the document.

I DO buy primarily for G2 and G3, both male and female. I buy products that allow for fast posing of everyday movements, especially ones that allow me to set up scenes in motion, ie facial expressions and responses, slight hand or body movements, walking, running, and fighting poses.

I DON"T buy, photo session poses, pinup or seductive poses. I won't buy those because I have no use for them in my renders, although I do appreciate their use and need by other artists, it is just not something I need to use.

Ditto!  Like Linton, I have no use for seductive poses in my comics unless used for some flat out humorous romance preludes to epic fails and whatnot.  Also no offense to pin-up fans... I get it sex sells and such and such.  I write/make comics for minors, so sex is the last thing that I'm trying to promote.

Personally,  I LOVE all the Genesis series models from Gen 5 - 7 (and with the GenX and all the fixings to make the sky the limit by incorporating every other character of the past into that model -  *KISS*  - absolute perfection!!)

---- but for me personally I'm into Gen 5 the most, as there are more morphs out there for this particular character and I can create a massive array of comicbook characters from just one unisex model.  I personally enjoy using the toonish characters in my comics so the overall shoutout to lifelike figures are sort of lost on me.  I'm sure pro-advertisement graphic designers, looking for cheap models who look like real peeps, are loving the realism and all, but yeah...

I took the survey.  Answered the questions.  I hope it helps you.

I buy a variety of poses despite saying I only buy everyday; those are my primary interest.

    I'll buy any that have a selection I don't have; I use them as a started, I don't use many 'as-is'.

    ---

I don't think the questions were sufficiently varied to allow for accurate data.

You need to ask more questions, similar to previous but such that they will affect the data in an accurate manner.

For instance questions that after you've determined if someone uses G3F the most, may then try to determine how much more than G2F, or G3M.

So you might have: Do you use other figures?

if so: on a scale of (as an example) 1 to 5 how much more do you use G3F to G3M; same for other sections.

    EDIT

It is more complicated to process the data you receive into accurate and relevant information; but remember it is information you're after, not data.

It can even be said, that no information is better that the knowledge of innacurate information but the feelings it is good info.

Rather than "Battle-Attack" styles, I've been looking for Unarmed Combat-Fighting styles.  This is frustrating because there are so few of them.

Don't worry I'm going back to making male characters as well.  But I have a huge backlog of unseen poses originally made for M4/V4 and I want to updated them so they can be used with the new figures.  The form is a bit restrictive yes, but it has a very targeted purpose.  To find out which of the Genesis figures to make the bulk of the poses for and which are the most interesting for customers.  The results of this I will share with all my colleagues here at Daz who are interested in the results.

More like hand-to-hand combat?  Not like the typical Tai-Chi or Kung-Fu combat styles, and not like boxing ones, correct?

Feel free to give me feedback on what you are interested in here in this thread, that is what it is for.

    Thanks for contributing,

  • With poses I mostly look for realism ... especially when it comes to female poses the often are unrealistic (bottoms thrust back, like they were meant to be tables and such stuff). also female poses often are created for a woman wearing high heels only. but there are unrealistic poses for the guys too... which often is even more ridiculous, since you're not expecting guys to stand like that but with women you're kinda used to it because you're seeing unrealistic poses anywhere in RL too (advertisements). the worst though are the female fight poses... I'm not looking for catfight poses... I'm looking for the same poses the guys get. luckily there are more out oft those, but still there's a lot of room.

I'm always quite pleased about good everyday poses that I don't have to fiddle with the feet and pelvis and finding fight poses for women that don't look like all women can do is try to scratch each other's eyes out and cry... I think we're past this. Sure there should be such poses to for those who want them... but having (more) real fightposes (from fantasy battle to streetfight to mma style and with everything in between) would reall be great.

Also I love poses where you can choose if you want to use the full bodypose or just the lower of upper part of the pose...

As for characters: I'd love to have an "only buy the texture" option. Since there are such amazing morphpacks out there, I hardly ever use the morphs of the characters (except for rune, olympia and bethany and respectively the HD Morphs) I just like creating my own characterlooks.
And of course having textures that can be used together with fightingposes (like the character gypsyangel is working on) are very appreciated.

I'm mostly using female characters, but only by about 6:4 ... since I'm using daz to try and recreate scenes out of rpgs or books the way I see them. so everything I wrote kinda goes for both genders. (and there's even the occasional hermaphrodite, that's why I loved Genesis1 so much and am still using it sometimes)  and so... that also fits to clothing (especially when it comes to women there's just to often part of the clothes that just... are a no go for me or rather for what I'm trying to create - high heel boots that can't be replaced becaus the pants only fit to theses boots, 'lookingholes' in the tops and/or pants that my characters just wouldn't wear... and hair (somebody already asked for more morphs for hair to fit even fight movements).

Yeah... that's what I can think of for now :D

Actually, I AM looking for Boxing and Wrestling poses.  Preferably wrestling, because NO ONE does that!

When you work off your backlog of existing M/V4 poses, please leave these formats in, instad of just supporting G3 like everyone else does nowadays. If it's not too much trouble. At least, t hese poses can be easily adapted to use with G1/G2. G3 poses are completely unusuable for the older generation characters.

  • XaatXuunXaatXuun Posts: 873

one thing I have missed about using the Generation 4 poses, most of those came  with a Upper and Lower,  allowing mixing  of body pose, too create another,  something I really have not seen in Generation 6 or 7, and a rarity in Generation 5 (but most Generation 5 are just renamed Generation 4, with minor adjustments). most poses work from one earlier generation, but generation 7 (to me) is in it's own, I can't really use any of the earlier Generations, and same as earlier generations cannot use Generation 7

I don't buy poses, because I'm limited, and still have to place a lot of time adjusting the pose to work, or get in the Posture I'm wanting, not that, that's done Anyways, but on the most part, most of my time is redoing arms, legs torso, but if I had a one click go to (partial), I would buy that.

also I should note,  .  .I have custom dialed figures, and just about all premade poses are not right, . . so find myself doing the rotating dials to adjust, I think that's a given on all custom dialed figures,  . .or is it just me.

One thing that is missing for me are Sport poses, outdoor playing poses, the Stereo typical chasing butterfly poses don't work for me, much, .    .  but with some adjustment can have the figure catching a ball from it. or a Frisbee

The survey seemed  a bit too restrictive...  I look for a variety.  I agree that poses of people doing everyday tasks are the most difficult to find - especially those that are executed well.

Poses that include individual parts poses - legs, arms, neck, head, and so on. Being able to have hundreds of combinations in addition to the regular poses adds a lot of value.  Female poses without heels.  Everyday life situation - I think themed pose sets can be effective.. waiting at the airport, yard work, a hot and humid day in the city,  a visit to the fair, ...    Very high quality hand poses -

You can actually use part of any pose by selecting (as an example) the shoulder; hold Ctrl before clicking on the pose; you'll need to change some options, but by experimenting you should figure out what works best at any given time.

You can always try one of Zev0's pose buildrs, which do what you are looking for (G2 as example): http://www.daz3d.com/pose-builder-for-genesis-genesis-2-female-s-genesis-2-male-s
