So, are you going to get a 1050ti and 1070?

Well, my last experience with MSI has just gotten even worse!

Durring our last pc upgrade (back in 2011) I had picked up an MSI MB for a PC and one of the RAM slots was bad so I returned the board for a replacement. The new one came in and again, any time I put RAM in that last slot, the computer wouldn't boot up (I have ballistix tracer ram in it which has LED lights that flash in different patterns. The more Ram is being used, the faster they flash.) So I could tell something was wrong as with 4 sticks in, the lights on the ram would flash very slowly and the computer would seem to take forever to post. (The MSI splash screen would come up and sit for a while before restarting itself in an endless cycle)

With only 3 sticks of ram in, the pc would work fine. Well after the replacement did the same thing, I figured maybe one of the RAM sticks is bad and not the MB so I let things go.

Fast forward to today, I got my GF a new, better case so I switched out all the parts into the new case. I had upgraded my tracer ram previously from 8GB to 16GB so I had my old sticks and figured while I was switching everything out I'll just pop one of my old sticks in her pc as I know for a fact they work so she can go from 6GB ram to 8GB.

My conclusion when the pc did the same thing as when I first put it together - MSI sent me back the exact same board I first sent in! They never fixed nor replaced it!

Missed that there was a second page.

no worries I know what age can do. :P

I didn't even know it was out of beta, made me crawl out of the new year isolation cave I'm normally in.

  • I have had good luck with both ASUS and EVGA for video cards.  Just replaced one of my EVGA GTX 970's with a GTX 1080 EVGA SC 8 GB.  I run both monitors off the GTX 970.  So far I have not used up all 8GB on the GTX 1080, so not dropping to CPU rendering for Iray, which I ran into with the 2 GTX 970's.

The GTX 1080 runs at 50-60 degrees C under full load, where the GTX 970 is running 65-75 degrees.

I think since I only have a small MB I am going to just upgrade my main GC to a 1050 if it fits. At least I will have a little more grunt for interactive rendering while I work on surfaces.

or I could go with this little chap 1060 3 GB mini

My problem is most scenes I work on for work are normally up toward to 11 -15 GB to render out. Though I have a feeling I wouldn't need that much Vram in the near future. For me it looks like a need a new rig but one thing is that I have learnt a lot about certain componets.

A 3GB 1060 doesn't make much sense. A 1050 TI gives you an extra GB, needs no power connection and costs £50 less.

Size of my Motherboard is the issue so I am going to pull the cover off tomorrow and take some measuements to see if the new boards will fit. If it will I will opt for a 1050 to aid rendering and something like a 730 with 4 GB for the monitor. Wish me luck.

Or if I have the room this one I see the smaller one are the same size or close as mine old GT610 but I see some are

    State; Width - Dual Slot

which I presume means they take up the room of two slots?

    Yep, double-wide

  • SzarkSzark Posts: 10,634

Ok cool. Might have to migrate everything in to a new case for the time being to fit the longer cards.

  • kaotkblisskaotkbliss Posts: 2,914

I was shocked at the length of the 970 I picked up as I figured they didn't get any longer than the 460 I had. Boy was I wrong but very relieved to find I had just enough room in my case to fit the 970. (Any longer and it wouldn't have fit)

I found a site somewhere shortly after putting the 970 in that showed actual pictures comparing the size of different nvidia cards.

You should be talking with the hardware experts.  Here's a response to another recent hardware question...

The point is a mute subject as I finally opened up my PC and had a darn good look inside. All I can do is upgrade my main GC the help with UI and Photoshop with a GT 730 Slingle slot 4 GB and a 650w PSU. I have just ordered them. Now to concentrate and work harder for a new beast.

Some newer cards ar over a foot long/30.48cm so when buying a new case Be afraid Be very afraid.

Every MB manufacturer has their own line of MBs that cater toward the low-end, middle, and high-end consumers.  If you stay on the middle road, you won't go wrong with any of them.  But, I just have one advice.  Don't get cheap on the MB.  It's the one major component inside your computer that should outlast everything else.

  • SzarkSzark Posts: 10,634

In Pound Sterling what would you say a middle road MB would cost? I have been looking long and hard and boy this is even more of a mind field than GCs and PSUs. I know what slots I need and how many but considering most 1000 series cards are dual slot thickness reducing the slots available considerably.

Logically I should choose a CPU first and go from there.

  • prixatprixat Posts: 1,588

Do you really need every slot, that you can't afford to sacrifice the one next to the GPU?

    What's your current motherboard?

  • SzarkSzark Posts: 10,634

my current MB is a Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 DVI meaning is no use to man nor beast. LOL I am thinking two additional GCs so that is three PCIe 3.0 slots and I was also thinking SSDs too. I read the PCIe SSDs are a lot faster than Sata.

  • prixatprixat Posts: 1,588

3 Slots, that can get really expensive, really fast.

An X99 motherboard is the obvious choice but since the CPU supplies the PCI lanes the cards need, you'll need an expensive CPU to go with the expensive motherboard.

Fortunately Iray does not need the full X16 throughput to the GPU. Even a GPU in a X4 slot will work, you might notice a pre-render loading delay, but the actual rendering time is unaffected.

I recommend one of the Z170 or Z270 boards like the Gigabyte Gaming G1 or this one:

    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-z170-pro-intel-z170-s-1151-ddr4-satae-m2-(pcie-sata)-2-way-sli-3-way-crossfire-intel-lan-usb-31

These motherboards supply the extra lanes and an M.2 connector for the SSD.

(The reason I'm suggesting Intel is to get that Thunderbolt header, external GPU boxes look like they are finally arriving this year and they seem to have settled on the Thunderbolt connector.)

  • SzarkSzark Posts: 10,634

Intel all the way for me. :)

Well it looks like I was on the right track as this is the type of MB I was looking at though I can't seem to find the CPUs on Scan for that MB.

external GPU boxes oh shiny. :)

Thanks prixat for sharing your knowledge. It is a great help to me.

  • prixatprixat Posts: 1,588

The Z270 Prime is their basic motherboard with 2 GPU slots.

You need a Z270-F at least, for three GPUs:

Thanks. Ok not much more but I do think going this route is my best bet. Are MBs more plug and play than the old MBs and I mean Jumper setting old. :)

  • prixatprixat Posts: 1,588

I have not seen a jumper in years! Even the BIOS reset is a push button.

Speaking of BIOS, there is no more BIOS you get to the firmware via UEFI, a colourful interface with mouse control.

I may have to write a letter of complaint to somebody, because it should not be this simple and easy! cheeky

  • SzarkSzark Posts: 10,634

LOL NO I like simple and easy. :) OK I have Firmware on this MB and been in and had a nosy.
