i13 On My Own Environment - Arg!

Arg - the i13 On My Own Environment looks great, but Iray only! i13 is breaking my heart, I haven't bought any of their stuff in a long time because Iray only! If they (and others) would make 3Delight material add-ons (that were reasonably priced) I'd buy the base product and the add-ons. I tried to go Iray; just not for me! Anyone else feel this way?

You're not alone. There are many users who have not jumped on the Iray bandwagon...
and what's even more sad is that is wouldn't take that much to provide 3DL surfaces with using the same diffuse maps, just different strength maps are needed, or adjusted ones.
I'll have to convert and see, but unless there's a lot of opacity maps, converting to 3DL should be pretty easy.
Lighting is an issue, of course, but not all 3DL sets come with lighting and if you have a lot of horsepower you could shortcut with arealights.
Yeah, you can get a reasonably decent image (rendering now) in 3DL by converting to ubersurface, setting specular color on everything, oh, a dark gray, making the curtains either not cast shadows or sheer (50% opacity/translucency), and using a distant + ambient light. I also applied a 3DL glass shader to the lampshades, but that's not strictly necessary (you could set them to be translucent or opacity 80% or something)
About 10 minutes or so.
If you want to tweak after that point, you can either play with the included point lights, turn various light bulbs into arealights (slower to render, but might look cool!), and add metal shaders to some of the metal bits to make them look, well, properly metal.
Here's my first example, using AoA distant + ambient. It probably took an hour, because I was testing a few different things. But the basics didn't take very long, and it rendered in about 7 minutes.
Some post work, mainly to shrink it (I rendered double size) and to increase vibrance, because it came out a little washed-out looking.
And here's a more involved work. Maybe 45 minutes to convert, tweak, do some test renders, get the lighting right, etc. Even if things were all set up ahead of time, unless I was doing an EXACT duplicate of a promo, I'd probably be spending at least 15-20 minutes tweaking things anyway (particularly lighting).
Took 22 minutes to render (again, double size, then I blur it a little, shrink, increase vibrance)
There's some speckling of lamps and the kitchen area. Not sure how much longer an increase in arealight samples would be...
Wow - that's great timmins.william! I appreciate your comments, analysis and work (testing and reporting your results to the thread)(the image you shared look very good). I hope PA see Szark's comments, "wouldn't take that much to provide 3DL surfaces with using the same diffuse maps, just different strength maps are needed, or adjusted ones"; there is a market for it! Thanks all for commenting and considering this thread!
I'm a little surprised nobody's made a script to convert Iray to 3DL. I can think out how you'd probably want to do it, but I don't have the skills to actually put the script together.
Have a word with Draagonstorm. She is a very clever lady.
Cheers,
Alex.
As an Octane user I find the iray only stuff equally frustrating particulary if procedurals.
D|S badly needs an iray texture baking script.
Draagonstorm is a she? Oh, I always thought she was a he...
Hopefully she listens! She already made one of my ideas a reality (Instances Plus)
Will - any results from Draagonstorm yet?
Carrara Octane video, needed heaps of work had to add all the maps except diffuse (as well as fixing Carrara uv wrap) manually is direct lighting only, 3Delight mats generally work ok.
Compared to
DAZ iray render, very slow few frames so used slomovideo to do a dreamy version
Oh I added fur to bed cover
Wow ToeJam! So both videos are great, thanks for sharing them, but the second one was amazingly vivid! How long did it take to render both? And you mentioned the work it took to convert the materials for the non-iray version; how long did the conversion work take?
well about 75 shaders, I just stuck the normal maps in bump for Octane skipped the roughness ones and added the opacity ones to the flames too.
It was a biased as direct lighting kernel, path tracing would not have been viable for an indoor animation with emission.
was fairly fast at about 10 secs a frame only 10 samples and took only 2 hours.
The latter iray one was unbiased so hence the better lighting but limited to a minute per frame, still took 10 hours
Wow, thanks ToeJam! 2 hour -vs- 10 hours! I really think it depends on the desired end product and how much time we have to achieve that.
