Product Compatibility

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this or not but here goes anyway.

I get so confused on how to match Daz Studio products up with each other.

I love Genesis but I want to use a lot of the older stuff because equal products are not available for it (or perhaps this is my bad perception of things).

For example:

If I have a Genesis character in scene, and I apply shapes from this product to it:
http://www.daz3d.com/shop/v4-and-m4-shapes-for-genesis

Can I then apply these products to those Genesis characters:

http://www.daz3d.com/shop/homo-erectus-m4
http://www.daz3d.com/shop/homo-erectus-v4

Or do those products only work with real M4/V4 characters?

And is there a K4 shapes for Genesis yet? (or is it not needed because of the Genesis child morphs?)

But if you do that will this product work with those characters:

http://www.daz3d.com/shop/homo-erectus-k4

It all gets very confusing. I start working on a project and give up because its too frustrating trying to get things to work with each other.

No, the older products won't work - the shapes for Genesis make Genesis look like the base figure, if used alone at 100%, but they can't change the mesh to the older figure's which is what's needed for morphs. What you could do, if you were willing, is buy GenX which will convert a morph for a supported figure (all that have shapes for Genesis, with the required add-on) into a Genesis morph that can be applied on top of the Genesis shape to match the original shape. The textures for fourth (but not third) generation figures will work on Genesis with the correct UV Set selected.

Ok thanks, but help me a bit more here - you went over my head there still.

    When you say I could:

"buy GenX which will convert a morph for a supported figure (all that have shapes for Genesis, with the required add-on) into a Genesis morph"

I think I understood that, correct me I'm wrong: You're saying I could buy the GenX product and use it to change the M4 homo-erectus morphs into Genesis morphs which can then be applied to Genesis character, correct?

But you partially lost me on the textures. You're saying I should be able to use the M4 homo-erectus textures on Genesis (because they are fourth generation), correct?

But what about selecting the UV sets? Is that just something you do in Daz Studio?

Yes, though if you get a character that uses other morphs ( a lot of fourth generation characters use the Morphs ++ sets for the body shape so that clothes stand a chance of fitting) you will need those; however, I think the Homo Erectus sets are custom morphs made in a modeller and included in the product so for those you wouldn't need anything else.

Yes, selecting a UV Set (which means picking how a texture is wrapped around the figure) is done through the Surfaces pane in DS - for something like this all you'd do would be apply the textures, which would look bad for the M4 and K4 sets, then in the Surfaces pane with Genesis selected click the figure's name in the left-hand column, scroll down the list of properties to the bottom and under UV Set choose Michael 4 or Kids 4 as needed (Victoria 4 is the default mapping for Genesis).

This thread was actually in the wrong place, I realised, so I've moved it to Nuts n Bolts.
