Installing twice is stupid, so how to fix wasting HDD space and money?

jcbunnjcbunn Posts: 270

Should we just abandon installing with D.I.M? even though its the only good way of making sure all products work together nicely.

just bought some stuff that comes to about 3 GB in DIM. after also installing in Daz its now 6 GB on HDD and 6 GB on a metered internet connection. (so Connect downloads it again)  so its wasting our HDD space and money.

My Daz 3D Library folder = 139 GB

My Daz Connect Library Folder = 110 GB ( EVERYTHING IN HERE is already in My Daz 3D Library Folder ) Hello ?? McFly... figure something out.

I'm sure this and been brought up many times, I just needed to vent but it really is F'n stupid.

  • Why are you isntalling twice? For a metered connection, if DS is the only application in which you use the content, using Connect would be best as updates need to download only the changed files but whichever you use don't use the other.

Haven't there been a number of reports of attempting to load a DIM-installed item into the scene resulting in invoking the Connect download/install routine? It's not common, otherwise a lot more people would be complaining, but for something that's "not supposed to happen", it's cropping up way too often.

It's hard to say how often it happens - there have been a few reports on the forum about it, but it's likely that most people encountering it will report it so we can't just pro rate those to get the incidence (which would still be low even if we could).

And several of them seemed to have other content/database/server/security software issues, in addition to the DIM/Connect wanting to double up.

Sounds like a pathing error in the product (installed via Install Manager) that because a referenced file cannot be found on disk, but is expected to be in the product due to metadata, Daz Studio is offering to download the product via Daz Connect in order to resolve said missing file. If that is the case, the user is typically given the option to reject/ignore.

Personally, as you asked, don't use Connect. To be up front about my advice; I don't like Connect (expecially the encrypted DRMed components), so yeh I'm biassed.

Did that, Guess whats listed as "connect Installed"  the friggin Daz3D program itself... is listed under "connect installed"

so YAH, picture a snake eating itself angry ya Brokemypcmike ROFL  (UAC did popup and double check something about dimhelper.exe i clicked yes )

should have done 10 at a time but when there is over 1000 of them...SELECT ALL is a double edged sword.

(In Dim, Redownload Daz Studio 4.9 (Win-64 bit) and install brought everything back in Daz)

EDIT: just noticed DIM is now useless, it has no ideal what is connect installed and what is not.

I have just over 1200 unique DAZ products according to DAZ Studio and of those it claims that about 140 of them need updating via Connect. However, they continue to say they still need updating even after I tell DAZ Studio to update them.

@jcbunn "EDIT: just noticed DIM is now useless, it has no ideal what is connect installed and what is not."

I don't believe DIM is supposed to know what is installed with Connect. In theory the computer's operator is supposed to know what is installed with each installer and pick one or the other for a given product.

So either don't open Studio and connect to the net, or don't use DIM to install.

The current version of DIM can filter by Connect availablity/installedness. If that isn't working please report it as a bug - assuming that the issue is consistent (if you close DS and immediately launch DIM you may not have PostgreSQL running, which will break the feature).
