rendering and shadows

Please explain me, what does determine the angle of the shadow in Iray rendering? I already played with different lights and it seems that the shadow do not obey the lights. it is still cast one specific angle no matter where I put my lights. How can I control it?

  • Have you turned off the HDR light by setting Environment Mode to Scene Only in Render Settings?

I can't find Environment Mode in 4.9 Render Settings. I see the Environment section, but HDR or Scene Only don't show up in any options. I have the same issue and have a new one where I can't get Forgotten Tunnel to show light at all while rendering with or without Auto Headlamp and additional lights - it renders nothing but black. I mention Forgotten Tunnel as I think my two issues are related to the shadow issues the OP mentioned (I was getting ready to make the same post when his showed up). If not, I'll gladly open a new thread.

Can you post a screenshot of the Render Settings pane?

Here is the screenshot, I believe that is the correct tab Richard was talking about.

EDIT: These are the default settings for Environment.

Right under the search/filter by box, the first item in the list is a drop down box...that's where you change to scene only.  It should have several options in the drop down menu...

    They should be:

    • Dome and Scene
    • Dome Only
    • Sun-Sky Only
    • Scene Only

Thanks, I'm trying that now. How much of a hit on rendering speed is this? I know extra lights, extra shadows......etc. I now have no choice but to use my laptop as my desktop refused to boot this morning. Another project for late tonight after work. I want to get a scene started rendering so it will be done by morning. It looks good! I now have to add more lights.
  • The problem is if I choose scene only the rendering becomes too dark I notice some noise time to time. So switching Doom is the only option to have control over the shadows, right?

No...without the dome, you need mesh or photometric lights   And you need to up the luminous flux values (depending on the light/units used, very high values of over 100,000 may be needed...)

Actually, Iray likes more lights rather than less. If a scene is too bright but renders sufficiently quickly, you can change the tonemapping to get a darker scene. Tonemapping can be changed while the render is running ("hidden" triangle on the lfet center border of the render window).

Fantastic tip! I set my max render time at 18 hours on the laptop (the only working computer of any horsepower at the moment I was approaching this and the scene still had too many sparkles and I was afraid it would end rendering. I was able to increase render time on the fly now. I didn't even see the grabbar on the left (that's how mine shows up) before.

Seeing this, what does 'Min Update Samples' do? Same with 'Update Interval'..... I'm trying to lighten the load as much as possible since rendering is definitely CPU centric.
