Screen Redraw issues -- SOLVED

I just installed DS 4.9.2.70 in Linux and am having some redraw issues with DS.  I thought it might be a problem with Linux and I didn't have something set right.  Maybe a video graphics thing.  I have since installed Windows 7 for emergencies and a few Linux resistant programs on a small drive.  I don't plan to use it much.  I installed DS 4.9.70 there as well.  I'm having the same redraw issues in Windows as I'm having in Linux so it isn't a Linux problem.  It could still be a graphics card issue, but I have the latest drivers for my graphics card (Radeon R7 260X) installed.

Any ideas on what to try to fix this?

Try rolling back a version of the video drivers...it does look, at quick glance to be a card issue.

  • I'll give that a try.  I'll let you know if that doesn't fix the problem.  This is the first time I've used 4.9.2.70.  I don't have the same issues with 4.9.1.30 so I wasn't sure if it was the card or DS.  I've got both version installed in Linux in different wine bottles and no redrawing issues with 4.9.1.30 at all which is why I wasn't sure even though it does look like a graphics issue.  Unfortunately, I can't install two full versions of DS in Windows to see if the problem is there in the older version without uninstalling the current version as far as I know.  It is possible I did something different with the graphics drivers in the two wine bottles, but I thought I set them up the same.

I'll track down the previous graphics drivers and try them out.

I've seen that before...too.   An older version of a program working better with a newer driver than the newer version with the same driver.  Figuring out what 'broke' in the update is the maddening problem.

  • So, I found the previous drivers for my card and installed them.  No luck.  I still have the graphics issue in DS 4.9.2.70.  After playing around with it, I'm not sure it is the graphics card.  It looks like the issue is just with the ActiveViewport.  That is the part that is having the problem.  It isn't refreshing during a render when the open windows are moved around.  I'm assuming that on my computer the ActiveViewport is given a lower priority than other parts of DS during a render.  What I find strange is that I don't have this Viewport issue in DS 4.9.1.30 at all.  Is there some place in DS where a user can set the refresh rate of the ActiveViewport?  I don't think I would have accidentally changed any settings like that.  To have it happen in two different operating systems makes me curious as to why I'm having this problem and no one else seems to be having an issue.  I tried doing a search before posting my query and had no luck finding anyone who had this same issue.

Not the refresh rate/redraw rate, but you can play around with display optimizations in the Preferences > Interface...flipping among the options sometimes helps.

  • So, it seems changing those settings in Preference>Interface>Display has fixed my problem with the weird ActiveViewport redraw issue.  The default was set to none.  I changed that setting to best (haven't tried better yet) and I no longer have an issue with the viewport not updating while the render is going.

Thanks for the suggestion, mjc1016!  :)

If it isn't drivers it's usually the optimization (or the other way around).  If it is neither then it is a Qt problem (rare) or an actual physical card problem (even rarer).
