Applying textures when importing from Turbosquid as .obj

Hi,

When downloading from Turbosquid, there's a bunch of files in 3DS, FBX, MAX, and OBJ formats. There is also a separate folder labeled "Textures" containing a GIF and TIF files. I imported the OBJ file in DAZ but am unable to apply/import the files that came in the "Textures" folder. How do I apply the original Textures that came with the Turbosquid download? Many thanks.

More often than not, the associated mtl file is looking for them in a specific location...which isn't where they are now.

That said, it's rather easy to just manually add them...if the surface names are logical and the textures named accordingly.  If that is the case, simply go to the Surfaces tab and for each surface click the little down arrow and select browse next to each property you want to add an image file to...

When the box pops up, just navigate to the folder and double click on the image you want add and repeat for each one.

For not well named/foreign language/numerically named and such, you'll need to do the same, but with the mtl file open in a text editor.

Do the object files import with the original material zones intact? In other words, after importing the object and selecting it, do different material zones show up for it under the Surfaces tab?

If not, and there is simply a single material zone for the entire object (assuming that it actually uses more than a single texture map), then you will not be able to apply the supplied textures without first re-establishing the material zones in the object in a modelling program.

If, however, the material zones are there and showing under the Surfaces tab, then it is a matter of matching the various maps (diffuse, bump, specular, etc.) that you have to the correct surface. Hopefully the naming conventions used for the maps correspond to those used to name the surfaces, otherwise a bit of guesswork or trial-and-error may be involved. To apply the maps, simply open the Surfaces tab, click on the little square with the down arrow on the left side of the channel you wish to add (Diffuse, Bump, etc.), and choose Browse to go to the folder where the texture maps for the object are. Then, pick the right map for that channel and you should see it appear in the little square, and on your object. Repeat the process for each map and material zone, always selecting the correct maps for each zone. Of course, once all the maps are loaded, you will still need to adjust and tweak the actual surface settings to get the desired results. Lastly, save the results (export object), so that you won't need to go through it all again next time.

Edit: Ninja'd by mjc again. That's what I get for being verbose. sad
