Skies of iRadiance - Sky Doesn't Appear? (Solved!)

PipefoxPipefox Posts: 113

I've never used skies or skydomes in my rendering before so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong here.

Can anyone please tell me how to use the Skies of iRadiance step by step?

When I've tried to load it into my scenes all I get is a flat grey background and a dark hole where the moon should be.

Thank you very much to anyone who can tell me how this works. I'm very grateful for any help I receive! :)

  • Is this in preview or in a render? Are you using Iray to render?

  • PipefoxPipefox Posts: 113

It looks both grey in the preview and in the render. :) I am using Iray.

Which sky are you using, from which set? I'm just going to look see if I have them.

OK, I do - and installed. I assume this is one of the night skies, with moon, so I just double-clicked DTSoI-NightTimeA which applied the render settings for the HDR and renders OK for me. Note that these are plain environment maps for the Iray renderer, they don't use a dome and if you have any kind of sky-dome loaded it will block the lighting

Here's a quick render - just a spehere (on a plane that is out of shot) lit by that HDR from the set. (Oops, forgot to turn the headlamp off in the first one - if you don't have any other lights in your scene, go to the general section of Render Settings and set Auto headlamp to Never)

Are you trying to use it with TerraDome 3? There seems to be a problem and the sky appears very grey  when using it in a TD3 scene with Atmosphere loaded. The only solution I have found is to either delete Atmosphere or thin it drastically. Oddly I don't seem to have this problem using other HDRIs I have downloaded or those that came with TerraDome 3.

Has anybody else encountered this problem? And is there another way to use Skies of iradiance  in TD3 with the atmosphere?

No, Charlie, there's no TerraDome. I haven't tried it that way yet, I'm just trying to use the product on its own. :)

That's the exact same Sky I'm trying to use, Richard! :) DTSol NightTimeA. There's no other lighting or anything involved. I tried loading up just the sky, and I end up with nothing plain empty gray, both in the preview window and in the end render. The render takes about 4 seconds, as if there isn't anything there. Am I missing a step? It says its been loaded into the scene, but then there's no sky.

I attached a file to show what I mean. There's just... nothing. I'm quite confused.

  • It may be that the Environment Mode is set to Scene Only - I just did a test and applying one of the presets doesn't change that. Look in the Environment group in the Editor tab of Render Settings andm make sure the mode is Dome and Scene or Dome Only (depending on whther you have local lights as wella s the HDR or not).

Okay Richard, I've just checked, I wouldn't have thought to look there, that was a good idea. Sadly, I'm already set to Dome and Scene.

I also tried it on Dome Only and have the same problem, blank set, no sky showing up.

I've also tried the iRadiance Sunny Skies and Sunset Skies and am having the exact same problem with them not showing up either.

  • Which version of DS is this - Help>About DAZ Studio?

If you open the log file after rendering (Help>Troubleshooting>View log) the last section should be a (longish) set of messages relating to the render - please post those here.

The version I'm using is Daz Studio 4.9.1.30 Pro Edition (64-bit)

Thank you so much for taking time to help me like this, I'm very grateful. :)

The log files are kind of a big wall of text, Richard, sorry for that!

What is the thousand traingle object you have in the scene, with a clone?

4.9.1.30 is an old version by now - 4.9.2.70 is the current stable build, 4.9.3.117 the current beta.

Now I'm very confused. I don't even know what a thousand triangle object is. This was a completely blank empty scene before I tried to load the sky in. There wasn't anything else there that I know of.

My version of Daz is old? How can I get an update? I don't know if that will help, but I would like to have the most recent version. :)

  • Downloading from DIM, or from your account page, will get you the latest version. I suspect the object with one thousand triangles may be something generated by the render engine - an on-the-fly sky-dome; I do get a more modest item if I render an empty scene.

  • Pipefox, when I first tried HDRI lighting I was trying to light the scene with the "Draw Dome" setting off, which was giving me a similar result to your gray screen.  "Draw Dome" is in the Environment group of the Render Settings (where you found the Dome and Scene lighting option). On my computer, this is what I see at the top of the Environment group:

Environment Mode (which you set to Dome and Scene)

Dome Mode (probably says something like "Infinite Sphere" or "Finite Sphere")

Draw Dome (make sure that is set to ON)

See if that helps--I don't have the Skies of iRadiance set, but the first time I worked with a dome, I poked around for an hour, checking out tutorials, until I saw that setting.

Okay, thank you Richard! It's now been updated. :)

After updating I opened DAZ, made sure the scene was completely cleared and empty. Once again I tried uploading the sky.

Nothing appeared in the viewport, and the render came out as a blank flat color.

That was a good suggestion, rockislander! :) My Draw Dome setting was indeed set to OFF. I switched it to ON and tried again, but sadly ended up with the same result. Still no sky!

Thank you though, it was worth a try. ^_^

Maybe I should open a help ticket at this point? I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here...

You have some color there. How is your camera set up? DO you have DOF on and some tiny depth and giant focal length perhaps?

I'm sorry barbult, I'm still embarrassingly new with the technical aspects of this program. :) Can you please tell me where I would look to check what the camera set-up is? I'm very grateful for your help!

@Pipefox "Can you please tell me where I would look to check what the camera set-up is?"

First you need to create a camera from the menu or a product. See screen shot 1.

Then Select the camera in the viewport (or by the scene menu) and then go to the Parameters tab. See Screenshot 2.

The final shot is after loading DTSol-Nitghtime C into an empty scene, adding a camera and rendering.

So sorry for my late reply, fastbike1! I was out of town for a few days so I didn't get to read your post until now.

I followed the steps you laid out and it totally worked! Though I still don't see any sky in the preview window, the scene rendered quickly and clouds and sky appeared as they should.

Thank you so much for helping me! The screenshots and step-by-step instructions made it really easy for me to follow. smiley I'm very grateful!

Thank you also to the other kind artists and admins who were helping me in this thread. I'm very happy to be part of such a nice community of artists who help each other out!

    @Pipefox

You're quite welcome. The downside of HDR images is that you can't see them prior to a test render.

Don't forget that you can rotate the HDR image if you want a particular feature in a particular place. A bit fiddly but doable.
