There is an option to view scenes as 'cartoon shaded' (as with other views), but when you render in DS there seems to be no way to choose this form as the output. In addition, can I change the characteristics to make it more or less 'cartoony'?
There is a Cartoon mode, a hidden property in Render Settings (click the lined button in the top corner or right-click the tab to get the option menu and enable Show Hidden Parameters). However it is just a toggle controlling which shader code is sued by the Daz Default Shader - anything which uses a different shader, as many newer items do, will not be affected. pwToon (for 3Delight) is the most common tool for getting a cell-shaded look but there are other toon sahders (again for 3delight rather than Iray) such as http://www.daz3d.com/skunkville-noir or http://www.daz3d.com/linerender9000 offering different effects.
You have found out tht the view shading does not translate to the rendered shading...you can view in wireframe and it will still render properly (full shading). That said, if you are using the Daz default shader (not the Iray one, but the DazDefault) AND rendering in 3DL you can render a 'toon' style.
To get the toon style...
Render Settings tab, right click the little lined icon in the upper corner and select Show Hidden.
Then scroll down to Render Style. You'll have two choices in the box Default and Cartoon.
Cartoon style only works in Intermediate Open GL and 3Delight. Both have slightly different results. You need to activate hidden parameters through the listing in the top right corner of the Render Settings.
Also, make sure you have a light in the scene, or automatic headlamp activated, or all you get is black shadow images.
This might be a bit of basic tip, but if you are happy with the preview view (before rendering) couldn't you just hit 'printscreen' and dump that into a graphics package like GIMP or photoshop?

You can render with the preview window colors if you set the render engine to one of the "Open GL" settings.
I must be doing something wrong. I get an interesting image in the workspace with it doesn't transfer to the finished render - it comes out as simply a normal 3Delight render.
You have changed the preview mode. Have you changed the render settings as well?
Please go to to the Render Settings and check if you have a) switched on the hidden properties and b) then changed the render style to Cartoon, as shown in the render settings in my two images.

Nope - can't find Render Style - Render settings, yes.
Did you turn on Show Hidden Parametrs for the Render Settinmgs pane? Are yoyu using 3Delight, not Iray?
I'll have a look again.

BeMKay,
Many thanks - the images made all th difference. Thanks.
Do you know if there is a way to adjust the cartoon settings, please?
I don't think you can. You could try tinkering around with the surfaces and see if it makes any differences in the 3DL version of the cartoon setting.
I usually don't use that function, and there are more powerful tools like Line Render, or ToonyCam Pro.
Thanks Bee.
Hello, I tried the tips above, but get the following message, and the figure comes out in black shadow. What should I change ?
Don't know if it is the cause, but could it be that you are using OpenGl, rather than Iray or 3Delight?
