Help with eGPU

AntausAntaus Posts: 41

I've been using Daz3D for some time now, and I'm impressed with the new Iray rendering engine, however I've hit a bit of a problem. I don't really use desktops anymore, because laptops are a lot more protable and, well... lap friendly. I know that Iray is optizimied for Nvidia and I was thinking about getting an Nvidia external plug and play GPU. My question is fairly simply, what eGPUs are compatable with DazD 4.9? Below I will list my computer specs as well. I know the CPU isn't the best and that my laptop is kinda of on the old side, which I plan to fix later on. Right now I'm looking for something to help improve my rendering capabilities until I can afford a decent laptop.

Model: Acer Aspire E1-51OP-2671

OS: Windows 8.1

CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU N2920 1.86Ghz

RAM: 8 GB

System Type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

Any Nvidia GPU that supports CUDA (i.e. has CUDA Cores) will work. The Nvidia website will tell you every thing you need to know.

What you really need: 1)More GPU Vram is better. The scene has to fit within the Vram or the GPU won't be used. There is no accurate way to know exactly how much Vram will be required until you start rendering. There are several approximations to estimate VRAM needed for a scene and several tricks to reduce the amount of VRam needed.

    2) More CUDA cores will be faster to render.

    3) Realistically 4GB Vram and >1500 CUDA cores are the minimum for a new purchase.

The older eGPU solutions required a proprietary PCIe card (and cable) for their external boxes.

The newer solutions seem to have settled on the USB C / Thunderbolt connection.

Neither are of much use to those of us with old laptops (or old PCs)!

While the software side will 'probably' work, the hardware side is an obstacle.
