Hello! I've been using Carrara for half a year and I want to participate, but it's my first time and I don't know where to post my entry? What the resolution of pictures should be and so on.

    Hiya,

Welcome to the forum... it's a very friendly and fun place.

This is only my third entry in a couple of years as have been really really busy, so I don't have all the latest on renders.

Diomede has just opened the entry thread.

Scroll down the topics till you see Entry Thread - Carrara Monthly Challenge 29: Anachronism (incompatible time)

You can post your WIPs here in this thread first and just post your final render in the Entry Thread.  I think you can't be over 2000px width and height, but am not sure to be honest. Someone sleeping in this morning may wake up and give you the right stats for that.  You can view other contest WIPs and ENTRIES if you go to the sticky posts at the top of the forum where they are archived from many past competitions. You can view some of the sizes there. I myself have to figure out how to put an image inline and not just as an attachment, or maybe the host will do that for me. Not sure and I need to know, too!

Enjoy, and hope to see your entry soon, almost finished mine.

Thank you so much, Silene, for the response and support! I'll try to figure out and create something as soon as possible.

    Hello, Vyusur.  Welcome.

SileneUK linked to the actual entry thread.  The Carrara monthly challenge requires a post to this WIP thread and a post to the actual entry thread.  The post to this WIP thread should include a screenshot of how you set up your scene in Carrara.  If you do postwork, then a WIP post should include the plain render before post work.  We try to encourage mutual support, tips, etc. and these WIP posts help contribute to that.  It is totally optional to post WIPs from earlier in your creative process, but if you do then people can offer constructive suggestions - or you might want to share a method or effect that you are using.

For the entry itself, as far as I know, you are limited by the forum software.  Attached files can be larger, but the pics imbedded in a post can only be 800 wide.  So, you could create a 2000 wide by 1500 height image and use the attach file function to upload it with your post.  It will load as a small file below your words.  People can view it in full size by clicking on it.  However, if you try to integrate the pic in your words, then the forum software will have a box for width, and here you should enter 800 even though your full imge is 2000.  Hope that wasn't too confusing.

This month's challenge requires that people use the dynamic hair function (or the terrain funciton if they have an older version of Carrara without dynamic hair).  Other month's won't have that.  When it is time to post your final image to the entry thread, I recommed you use the following format.

Me, too... I needed to know the embedding thingy!  yes Silene

OK here's my last WIP with the hunters getting lasered by the Mammoth Queen... and a test render.  Will tweak lighting and some other things I am having trouble with and set up render to run overnight... and hope for the best.  I am away on a course later in the week... was on a wait-list and got an email and can't turn it down. But still have my regular work to do. Sod's law!! indecision

Trying out the inserting of images in the message body as well. Thank you again Diomede for helping!

    Mammoths with lazers!  Excellent, SileneUK.

I should also give a reminder about 2 additional features this month.

    1)  People are permitted to enter their image in both this month's Carrara Challenge and the Its Raining Men Again challenge in the art studio forum as long as it qualifies for both

    2) This month there is a $20 Daz gift card for best entry by a relatively new Carrara user (or participant).

Here is my composite image for my Man of La Mancha tribute.  The various multipasses are attached.  The NPR was used to give a little texture.  The Toon III was used because I like toons. wink The volumetric pass was used to get the hair from the photoreal render so it could be combined with he NPR and toon.

Welcome Vyusur... climb aboard.  If you have any questions just ask.  Check out my WIP for a simple example of a Render and Setup. The Setup of course  does not need to be in wireframe like I do. You can mouseover each of the pics to get an idea of image sizes... I don't know what the limit is... I assume that if it is too large to upload then it's too big.  For examples of entries check out last months at Carrara Challenge 28 Marriage Voting Thread.

I need to get back to my scene, but discovered something interesting I did not know about. Changed my avatar to a proper 3D (it was a 2D PS comp before). Messing about with her hair, I found that by accident, if you select some of the guide hairs (either with or without generated hairs showing) when in the hair room with the selection tool, then move down one to the SCALE tool... you can grow or shrink the hair with a lot of control!

It took some practice, but it will shrink or 'grow' all the hairs for the selected guides. Including the shape, eg how much distance you have pushed already, wave, etc.  Hard to show in screenshots, but here it is briefly. Sorry if you already know this... I usually just dealt with setting length with the tool in the menu across the top, or cutting with scissors when increasing the length from the right-hand menu is too drastic. Keep in mind that I had incorporated a wave into the hair already, so if you do that, and then want to trim, the generated hairs will always show shorter than their guides to begin with.

Hope this helps....I lightened my render to show the side hair layers.  heart Silene

    kewl!!!

    thanks!

@Vyusur, great job.  My personal preference is for the dino with hair.  I really like the vivid colors of its mane.  Good choice.

@MistyMist - sorry, I don't know the answer to your particle question.  If you can't make particles stick, I guess my workaround would be to use a replicator to put additional partiles on the surface and then use the time funciton in the shader's alpha channel to make more particles appear on the desired surface as more collide with it.  Hopefully, someone else has a better suggestion.

Thank you, diomede! In this case I will leave mane in place smiley

Hi, Silene. May I ask you, what are the red wire cubes for in your scene? Is it some targets?

The one on the right on his a$$ is for the fire, the one on the left dead guy, I made the fire into smoke by using white and gray instead of yellow and orange as you do for flames.

Evilproducer made a great campfire based on a sphere that I used to get a more round effect, but you can use a cylinder, box or sphere for the 'container' .  But try dropping one of the object effects from the tool bar below into the scene and do some spot renders to see how they work.  Fire is the easier to see, and in the right panel when you are on 'fire'... click shuffle and keep spot rendering to see the different effects.

I am using them still at a very basic level. Dartanbeck is a genius with fog, smoke, flames... and many others, too. I just know hiim to be a Lord of Destruction devil

Love the hair on your dinosaur... there are people who pay a LOT of money to get that kind of hair colour! Keep working with it, looking good.

You can never experiment too much with Carrara laugh yes Silene

Vyusur,   Kewl mane on that dino! Looking forward to see your final entry.  Sooo you now have a few WIPs... while you don't need more it's always nice to show more so folks know how it's moving along and you can get suggestions as well as questions answered.  That's what has helped me as I strive to be better.  I never imagine winning anything... I enter just for the pure learning experience that each Carrara Challenge offers me. Before this one I'd never used Carrara Hair.  Thanks go to diomede for giving me the incentive to give it a try and to start using it more often.

OK, I know I'm late to the party and this was thrown together in an hour or so, just to show support for the challenge.  I haven't put nearly as much effort into this as some people - just a couple of V4 characters with pre-made clothing and Carrara hairs used from my library.  The concept is that a medieval (female) bodyguard to the Princess is secretly using a microphone headset!  The background and lighting here are just an HDRI and rendered in Octane, for a final image I will replace that with an indoor scene and totally different lighting, so this is just a WIP. Screen shot also attached.

some really cool stuff happening here.. a some free models to boot.. awesome!

Here is another I played with today.. the shuttle cockpit was used.. I made a glow map for it for all the lights and retextured the super suit for an android look on G1.. I was going to use a robot but thought maybe not quite right for the scene.. Retextured the abacus as well.. Used 2 globes and 1 distant light for lighting and the aura effect on the glow channels.

did some more on my 2nd entry by adding a comet with hair!

playing more with the shaders and lighting.
