Saving Decimator LODs?

I decimate some stuff in my scene, assign the new LODs, save, and close. I come back to my scene, and the LODs are not set and everybody is back to default, and I have to go hunt down each item I put LOD on. This is a bad workflow, so I'm obviously missing something. How do I save the LODs generated by Decimator so I don't have to hunt-and-peck through my objects every time?

This is an acute problem because I'm working on a render for a client and there's 1.5 million vertexes and waaay too many light sources kicking around. If I don't decimate enough, Iray crashes, and then I have to restart studio, and then I have to find everything and decimate it all again, and if I missed one item Iray crashes and I have to restart studio and start hunting for my decimation list again.... you see my problem.

  • I'm afraid LoDs are not supported by the DSON format, as far as I know. It would probably be possible to add a post-load script to apply the LoD for you - I think the needed bits are exposed to scripting.

Sad and slightly annoying. I'll have to keep better notes for the moment, I need this job done today or tomorrow.

Incidentally and on a related topic, is there a way to reset Iray without restarting Studio if I ask it to count to umpty-billion and it rage-quits? I need to get four Titans or something for my next computer :P

  • No, if it runs out of RAM you will have to restart DS - at best, sometimes you may need to restart Windows. Aren't I the bearer of glad tidings today - sorry.

Oh well. You bring me the somewhat ego-boosting news that I'd already found the fastest workflow. Yay me?

I've partitioned my scene and I'll composite it in Photoshop. It will be done!
