Layered Image Editor and IRay renders

I have just spent some time tring to overlay items with additional layers in the surfaces tab. They came out white in IRay, as if the new layer (regardless of its original completeness) prevents IRay from working correctly. Removing the layer worked, but of course I lost the overlaid details too. They show up fine in £Delight.

Is there something I need to do to make them work in IRay, or do I have to revert to the rather more specific method of combining the layers in a 3rd-party photo-edit program and then use the new texture?

Thanks (I hope).

  • Are they working in 3Delight? Are you using a separate mask image, or relying on the PNG/Tiff alpha channel for masking?

To expand a bit on Richard's post...alpha channels are a bit wonky in the LIE.

Richard! 'Are you using a separate mask image, or relying on the PNG/Tiff alpha channel for masking?'

    Unhhh????

I simply open the surfaces tab and pick a surface (say torso) look for the image that represents the skin appearance (normally the diffuse tab) and then choose layered image editor (I think). Add a layer and then add an image from somewhere on my computer. In 3Delight this works fine, but for some reason IRay was refusing to do it - giving me a totally white appearance to the relevant bit.

  • What do you do after adding the image? If nothing, and it doesn't simply cover the image completely (which would make suing LIE rather pointless) then you are either changing belnding mode or relying on the alpha channel (transparency) in the image file - PNG or Tiff, since those are the formats that support that. If that's the case then that is most lilkely the problem - you need to use an image editor to create a separate black-and-white mask image to use in LIE instead.
