Name That Petipet Model Inspiration!

I can't locate it now, but I remember there was a discussion where some of Petipet's earlier models were identified as clearly being inspired by pre-existing real or fictional stuff. Starship Cyclone was an obvious one, though some pointed out Submarine Goldfish and Nomad Module 2 were apparently based on old Russian vehicles. I remember noticing, later on, while searching for reference visuals of missile launchers, that their Rocket Platform match up with some concept art from one of the 'Halo' games, too (although, not having much experience with that series, I don't know if it was unused or made it into one of those games).

With that in mind, is anyone aware of whether these are based on pre-existing stuff or whether they're truly original? There are some artistic ideas I'd like to use them for, but don't want someone to come along and go, "Oh, that's from that thing!" :)

I'm fairly sure the last two were at least inspired by 'War Of The Worlds' (which is fair game), but the specific models could have already featured in a computer game or something, for all I know. Did Antares already feature in something like a 'Halo' game, for instance, like Rocket Platform apparently did?

Actually, I think someone identified that as being from the third 'Bioshock' game, if memory serves rightly?

    EDIT: Located it!

  • ^To me it just looks like they were both inspired by regular trams.  Similarities to each other are inevitable but it's hardly a unique idea from bioshock.

That strikes me as a bit of a stretch. I can't see any significant similarities in shape or form.

Not so. How many other ships do you know of that have that type of air foil design? Look at the promo pictures. Three of them display the wings in vertical position. I agree that neither the body or the wings share similar shape or form, but the vertical flight configuration is definetely Slave 1 inspired. Thats why i said partly inspired. wink

Edit: Maybe rotating flight configuration is a better description than vertical flight configuration...

I'd like to know what the inspiration for this one was as well:

I dunno... I still don't see it. From the promo images, the cockpit only has a single orientation, and the engines spin around it.

If that's the criteria you're applying, it has more in common with a Harrier jump jet than Slave I IMO, and even then it's not enough of a similarity by a long shot to pull up as a potential issue.

Yah, I can see that I suppose. I still think though that given Petipet's admiration for sci fi, he had to have had Slave 1 in mind to some degree or another. I mean, come on... its Slave 1! I still remember seeing it for the first time and thinking it was one of the coolest most unconventional designs ive ever seen.

Gotta agree with Shane..I have a number of Slave 1 models around my apartment (one fell on me last night :( ) and while I see the features AUN's pointing too, I'd say it's a big stretch.

  • Well, does anyone else have any ideas of what may have inspired http://www.daz3d.com/starship-vampire ? I stilll think Slave 1 was an inspiration. Now that I think of it, the fuselage resembles that of an F-117 stealth fighter.

Not a Petipet product, but it had definitely been used for the central part of the craft in this set: http://www.daz3d.com/space-dock

Yes, you are right, many of the models that I made, I was inspired by Soviet films. I really like the Kinza-dza movie, I liked the Pepelats flying machine.

I've been picking up a LOT of your products over the past year or so (and a ton during the PC+ Sales). I now own most of your catalogue because your stuff is just too good to pass up! Thank you so much for creating such fantastic sets!

I've a lot of petipet's products too. Much I bought to help furnish various interiors of the many home sets I've accumulated but I think I like the Zeppelin Star the best of the products. I have no ideal which films any of these where inspired by though but asa petipet say they are from old Soviet films, I'm thinking if old Soviet films had such contraptions in them I'm interested in seeing those films. How on earth did they pull them off? It looks too out of this world to be in an old Soviet or any other earthly film. I don't even know Russian so I'd just be looking at the pictures as the film played.

It reminds me somewhat of some of the old Starcom toys I used to have as a kid.  Particularly the "Shadow Vampire".

I always felt a similarity between Petipet's Dominator with the Reapers from Mass Effect - so I use them that way

To me, the Sci-Fi UFO seemed like a redesign of a classic UFO made to look like it belongs to the Dominator series - and so that's how I use it.

Putting these with the Dominator series in space can make for a truly deadly-looking interstellar adversary. I've since expanded the series so my collection is nearly complete, but in my early Dominator days I also used Ravnheart's Marcoor Intellibot Scorpions as one of the Dominator attack craft. Worked great! Those deadly legs would grapple their enemy's fighters and they'd go to mork disabling or overtaking the systems, either destroying them outright or turning them against one another.

And for a completely different purpose, I used Dominator Planet to construct this Nebula Station

Before I actually looked to compare, I always felt that it was (at least loosely) inspired by the Flying Wing. Now that I look to compare the two, I'm not entirely sure why I felt that way.

I'd have said this was more clearly inspied by the eagle (or the Hawk, which made some appearances) https://www.daz3d.com/vanguard

I can see the Vanguard being a Hawk designed for a planet with atmosphere rather than for the Moon.

Not *that* far off, if you think of adding thr sky hammer's body and rear end to it I wouldn't be surprised what whoever designed the inspiration for the Sky Hammer might have used it for *their* inspiration. Everyone's inspired by *something*.
