Dome question

Probably a dumb question,

if if I render a still image it just takes a few seconds with the lights etc.

But when I add a Sky dome,  then all the sudden it takes forever to render an image in 3Delight.

I played with the settings to see if i could speed it up, but don't see anything for it.  So what makes it so slow all the sudden?   isn't it just adding a background to it?

What are you using for a dome?

it's just called SkyDome  (think it's from Pirates Cove)

I was trying to find other ones, but can't seem to find them anymore..  driving me nuts.. (can't even find Uber Env. in my search or going through the smart lib.  Even under the  U from the files it's not there)

Okay, so it's a dome that's set up to be a dome...

    What lighting are you using?

Because if it wasn't setup as a dome, it could be trying to calculate the shadows for it, depending on the lighting.

  • Oh , I didn't setup any lights for it yet.  I just wanted to see how fast it was. I'm asuming if I add lights that it will be slower.

Okay...I just ran a few renders.

First one...simple scene...plane and sphere, no lights, just camera headlamp: Total Rendering Time: 7.2 seconds

Second...same scene, but added a dome, with no image on the dome: Total Rendering Time: 18.90 seconds

Third...added an image to the dome: Total Rendering Time: 38.71 seconds

4th...repeated run 3, no change: Total Rendering Time: 16.43 seconds

5th...same scene, but added a distant light with raytraced shadows: Total Rendering Time: 25.13 seconds

The extra time, about 22 seconds was spent converting the dome image to the tdl file that 3DL uses.  More time would have been used with a higher resolution image...

So that would account for some of the time increase...exactly how much of an increase are you talking about?  What is the image, if any that preloads on the dome?

My tests were run with Progressive =ON in the 3DL settings (that enables the FASTER raytracer in 3DL).

  • The progressive really doesn't make a difference for me.

Sure I see the screen completely building up  and jumps to 54%  but then it takes a while to finish the image

If I turn progressive off,  then it takes the same amount of time.

On a side note:  where do I find the uber Enviroment?  (those kettle ones)  I can't seem to find it anywhere anymore.

Try: Turn off cast shadows on dome.

  • ok, I will try that..  it's rendering atm  (images taking 5-10 min a piece  have 500 to go :(   )   and noticed that it's not even a dome yet..

it's the Hydro package from West ward.

3Delight uses the CPU right?   since it have 64 Gb memory and only 10 Gb is used for the image.
