Newbie Question about lighting. No light is showing up during my spot renders

Where is the light?

My subject seems oscurred in darkness:

My settings:

render settting
    still image
    photoreal
    auto head lamp = NEVER

    environment mode: scene only

No Camera

2 spot lights
            intensity 200 for both
            luminous flux 210000 for both

they are both a meter from my charater

Thank you all!

  • Hello! thanks for reading:

n00b lighting problem: renders are missing lighting or it's too dim to see.

I have no other points of light in my scene.  Sometimes I can get this work but don't know what it's not now.

    Thanks!

  • I get a very brightly lit object with that set-up, though you should not generally use Intensity for Iray lights. In fact my lights were a bit further away than that - depending on the spread angle setting your light my be quite limited in extent. If you pick the lights from the camera/view pop-up list at top-right of the view port can you see your model? What happens if you replace the figure with a cylinder 2m high and 50cm across?

  • Thank you for the help! I removed all lighting. Added a camera with the headlamp On and Intensity 80 poited at a cylinder 2m x 50m.  The spot renders it black.

  • Please attach you scene to a post, with a note of any content used, or a scene with a promitive that shows the same issue so that others can have a look at it.

    What does "No Camera" mean?

    Anyway, in no particular order:

    1. Iray sometimes gets a lighting glitch that can be cleared by restarting D|S. If that doesn't work, restart your whole computer.

    2. Make sure you're not pointing the camera through a wall. In preview it may appear the camea is within the confines of a wall or other obstruction, when in fact it's right inside it, blocking everything.

    3. Simplify the scene by clicking off the "eye" icon on everything but your subject and one light..

As Richard says, post a screenshot of your scene list and preview pane. Otherwise, we're all in the dark because we can't see other aspects that you may not be listing.

  • I ended up restting my render settings to default. Then set environment mode to Scene Only. I added a single point light.  Thanks for the idae of creating a simple test case to help me trouble shoot it!

    Cheers!

Intensity doesn't really work for Iray lights. Environment intensity does work and is useful for HDRI.

Not sure what is causing your problem. I've duplicated your description and attached a screen cap of the viewport and the resulting render.

No camera, default HDRI, Doem and Scene, Two photo spots, 210000 each

  • Thanks again everyone. I will post screenshot of my scene list and preview pane next time I have an issue.  Thank you for the tips in general and about not using intensity for Iray.  My solution was to restart DS and start again. I set my camera headlamp off. Render Settings Enviroment Mode to Scene Only.  Created a primitive cylinder and a spotlight pointing the the cylinder. Then I increased the spotlight Luminous Flux until the cylinder started to light as expected.
