Trying to get rid of this highlighted rectangle in my viewport, I don't want to touch anything for fear of screwing my viewport up, but it is bloody annoying. no one seems to know how to do this. Please help me I'm new and stupid. Thanks

Change the render mode to match the viewport instead of being proportioned to be a ratio of 10:13 that fits within your viewport
Or turn off the Aspect Frame in the viewport option menu - the lined button at top-right, or right-click the tab.
That is your Viewport — as Richard said above, it's the Aspect Frame, and it shows the exact limits of what part of the camera view will be rendered.
Keep in mind that the render size defined in your Render Settings might not be (probably won't be) the same shape as your Viewport, which is generally the leftover part of your screen in between all the other onscreen working tabs. The Aspect Frame isn't supposed to be annoying, it's supposed to help you frame your render exactly the way you want. Get rid of it, and there's no guarantee the edges of your Viewport will match the edges of your render.
Uncheckecking the aspect frame worked! Thank you.
