How to reduce polygon count or decimate?

I have been able to export into 3sd max an Autodesk file that I can change the mesh shape on, but whenever I export it from Max it give an error - invalid triangle count: must use between 0 and 65535

i am assuming it's becuase there's far too many polygons and I need to reduce them somehow.

What's the best way to decimate from daz 4.5? Is there a plugin I can buy?

Thank you for any advice.

just taking a guess here but isn't the .3ds format limited to 65535 facets on a mesh?...in which case your better off exporting as .obj format which doesnt have any limits.

    Thanks

The limit on .3ds format files is 65535 faces as stated above but the usual error message is

Object [whatever] has too many faces (more than 64K) to export

It doesn't usually say anything about triangles.
I don't have the MDL exporter in this version, but I think that is what it used to say.

DS cannot import .3ds format and as mentioned before, you will lose any rigging on OBJ or 3ds export.

Thanks for the help. I finally figured this out to be a Max problem where all the meshes in the scene were not skinned properly. They were so small they escaped detection until I turned on hidden frames.

Thanks for the help, you guys are super kind.
