The OBJ is the shape, the CR2 contains the posability, morphs and material settings (but not the actual textures).

Cr2, PP2, Pz3, Pz2, Hr2, these are all Poser files. Pz3 was the scene file introduced in Poser 3. Not sure if they still use that suffix, but basically, all of them are the same format. Cr2 being a single figure, and Pz3 being a complete scene. You can actually change the suffix from Cr2 to Pz3 (and the reverse and it'll work, it'll just be recognized by Poser as a different part of the same format.

Funny, I don't know nearly as much about DAZ, DZ, or DUF files... in fact, I know next to nothing at all about them by comparrison... those are native DS files.

The other way round, if it's a figure. For example Hiro 3.cr2 will load blHiro.obj from the geometries folder. The obj is the base mesh; the cr2 contains deltas for the morphs, materials data and other figure set up information.

Obj files are a standard format used by many applications, often as an exchange format for importing and exporting, as well as being internally used for mesh data. They can be saved with a companion material file (.mtl) which holds materials and texture data, but for morphs and base shapes only the obj is required as that contains the vertex information.

When you import an obj into DAZ nothing else loads, unless there is a .mtl file with it. Although DAZ can load cr2 files, of course, it has it's own formats and doesn't need them per se. They do have cross platform support with Poser, which has been traditionally essential, so you will see a lot of Poser format files in your DAZ runtime (in fact the "runtime" is a Poser convention in itself).

So if you wereto model a new piece of clothing for a figure would you load one of those files into your modeling program?

    yes

If you're modelling for Genesis, export the Genesis figure with the base morph you intend to model for, such as Genesis Female, Victoria 4 or Victoria 5.

Bobbie25 has videos on YouTube on how to deal with it after your clothing is modelled.
