Sure. Just leave the background empty in your scene, and after rendering save the image as .png file. This way all the empty space will be transparent.

    Yup! XoechZ is dead on...

Hey, but try this, write a bunch of text onto an image file, save that to PNG so that the text is to alpha channel, and apply that a figure's skin as a texture! It's way cool!

Never tried that, but seems to be a good idea to play with.

What I want to add is that saving as .png file is always a good idea, no matter if you need the transparency or not. .png is a non destructive image format which gives you the full quality for post processing. .jpg is a compressed format and you will loose image quality. Therefore .jpg files are much smaller.

If you want to avoid transparency in your image save as .bmp file, which is also non destructive.

And massive compared to a JPG, about five times the size at least. The amount of detail lost by JPG compression is tiny, and is more than offset by the amount of disk space saved IMO.

I set my background to a black color so when I render what I'm working on will be transparent when I take it in to psp or gimp

Is it possible to export a video (e.g. AVI format) with a transparent background?
