I'm starting to understand lights, shadows and surface

It took me some and a lot of experimenting but at the end it is as simple as real live photographing and lighting.

And is real fun to do,

    Good stuff, Tip in real world settings you will normaly only have ONE shadow casting light unless more more than one light is on in the scene, like a bedroom with lamps. Even then the closest light will cast the strongest shadows. The second will be softer and washed out.

    I have a DS cameras & Lights tutorial which you may find helpful. I used to be a photographer, so I find there are many simillarities.
