Making Character textures

I am looking for a 3d paint type program that is economical , cheap lol , That i can use to create textures for v4,s4, v5 m5 ect.
I have tried 3d Blacksmith in the past but not compatible with genesis or V5 M5.
I certainly dont have the financial means to buy photoshop. and gimp is hard to get things done i need.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Move to Nuts N Bolt since it wasn't a product suggestion.

    Blender 3D has 3D paint tools, which you could use alongside the Gimp for plain 2D work. Both are free.

    http://www.gimp.org IMHO the easiest and best freeware paint program...
